Hello. I'm having an issue when I am on a conference call and send an e-mail (particularly one with an attachment) people on the phone cannot hear me, but I can them.

Particulars
- Comcast Cable
- According to a dslreports speedtest dl is 5344 and upload is 360
- Checkpoint SecureRemote VPN to my company for e-mail (however Vonage does not go through this)
- My testmyvoip results were between a good and bad cell phone call

My thinking is that the upload pipe is too small. I am about to drop Comcast and go to Surewest which has fibre, but wanted to see if anyone knew of any other workarounds. Cry

Your problem is that you don't have effective QoS

Without QoS, your email send is taking up too much of your bandwidth, and there isn't enough left for Vonage.

What you need is not more bandwidth (though that is one possible solution). You need a router that is capable of managing your upstream or "upload" bandwidth so that Vonage packets get the top priority. That way, it will slow your email down just a bit so it can make SURE each and every packet of Vonage data goes through with no delays.

D-Link has a new router out that has a chip called "StreamEngine" that reportedly works well, Hawking has a "VoIP Enhancer" that simply plugs into your line that reportedly does a fine job. My personal favorite is the Linux-based Linksys WRT54GL router, with some aftermarket firmware installed. All three options are about the same money (in the $75 range).

(Note: I have 256k and use conference calling, VPN connections, email send/receive, AND BitTorrent P2P at the same time I'm on my Vonage line, with NO reported problems with voice quality)

Conference call could be running your upload, especially your upload has more to do with them hearing you. Two calls could use up to 180. Sending an email is going to certainly push some limits.

Do you have any QOS controls in place. In theory, 360 seems kind of low for many providers, but cable providers tend to narrow the upload so they have more room for download.

Another option would be to use bandwidth controls, and lessen the impact on the upload stream
