I made my first international call with my Vonage phone last week to Eastern Europe.
Unfortunately I don't think I'm ready to repeat the procedure. It's not Vonage's fault, but I'm wondering if anyone here has a workaround.
The problem is that there was a fair amount of background noise on the line, and the person I was calling had a relatively soft voice. The Vonage phone was unable to distinguish between the two and I lost perhaps about 30% of the voice packets coming in. Apparently the other party could hear me just fine.
Now, I might make some complaint about quality of international calls, but this is almost certainly a problem with an Eastern European Teleco with poor quality lines.
What I'd like to know is if there's some way to tweak the modem or the connection so that data packets are always sent (or are more frequently sent), regardless if the other party is speaking or not. I'm guessing this isn't easy, as it likely isn't a modem problem but a phone routing problem.
Thanks for any help or pointers anyone can provide. |

Some of the Vonage adapters have a Silence Suppression setting on them, but unfortunately, I don't think it'll affect the remote audio, just whatever audio you're sending. Your only real path to a solution is to call up Vonage tech support and explain what happened. Maybe they can adjust the particular gateway that they're using in Eastern Europe. |
