PostPosted: Tue Mar 07, 2006 7:12 pm    Post subject: VOIP big concern with current ISP and WGT624 router & se Reply with quote Back to top

I use Earthlink Cable Internet 5 Mbps/384 kbps (real 4600/340) over Time Warner Cable network. I have Motorola Cable Modem, Netgear WGT624 v2 Wireless Router, which connects:
my machine (1st port), my web server (2nd port), my printer (3rd port), my parents desktop (wireless across the street), my wife's laptop (wireless@home). I use remote desktop to connect home from outside world, ssh to connect to linux web server from outside world, remote admin with router. WGT624 v2 has this issue that sometimes cannot obtain automatically lease after it's expiration. IP is kept, but lease expired. It needs to be released and renewed manually from router. It stops my web server which is annoying. Also, Time Warner Cable is unreliable as it comes to service uptime. Once I had no internet service for 4 days. It took me 3 days just to convince them it is their fault to start fixing the problem. Now my questions:
Is Voip telephone part of my private network ?
Will my router issues affect Voip telephone?
Does Voip telephone works in "parallel" on my broadband connection, so it won't cause slowdowns?
What if TWC screws me up again with internet? Will that mean I will have no telephone either ?
Simple questions for someone who experienced similar problems and who knows how Voip works. Any suggestions appreciated. THNX

no internet, no Voip. voice over ip requires just that, a working ip. this becomes a little bit grayer in the area of, for instance, time warner's digital phone which actually runs on its own spectrum, if you will. you can have time warner digital phone without having the internet at all. but that's the exception, not the rule.
any third party Voip provider requires an internet connection. you can put the Vonage router in front of your other router, but I believe SSH is broken on them, so that may cause you more headache. someone who actually uses that will have updated info, or just search the forum for ssh to see if it has been fixed yet.
so yes, your issues can and will screw up Vonage.

And to answer the question you didn't ask- I wouldn't recommend Vonage or any other Voip service without rock solid internet service. The exception to that would be if I was using the Voip phone strictly as a second phone to give me low cost long distance when it's working. If you expect a reliable primary phone, you must have solid internet service to use Voip.

Even as a secondary line, get your internet connection working well before you ever consider any Voip. You'll be pulling your hair out and totally dissatisfied with internet phone service unless your connection is stable and working well.

Good answers guys but I didn't catch one about it being part of your private network. Also I was wondering, and I dont mean to hijack here, but will using this service decrease my internet speeds and if so by how much?

Thanks, MR

it will depend on what you have it set at with the bandwidth saver. if you have it set all the way up I believe it is set to reserve 90k for transfer and that would affect you download by 90k.

I thank you all who answered my questions. Seems to me, that only reliable phone is regular phone.
From what I understand;
Time Warner Cable Digital Phone Service works on it's own broadband spectrum, and I don't need to have internet. This basically means it won't affect my internet and my setup and it is the only solution. Am I right?

I wouldn't say that. My Vonage phone is very reliable, but I have a solid internet connection.

Hard to say. You'd have to check with TW on that. With most cable services your internet speed can be affected by other traffic- a neighbor doing heavy duty file transfers for example. It's conceivable that it would also be affected by TW's digital phone service, though I tend to doubt it.
