Howdy,

I've been looking at getting Vonage for my business. There are no number transfers, or anything like that. I've got a few questions:

1) Can I ask to be assigned a "good looking" business number like:
xxx-xxx-9400 rather then a residential looking number like xxx-xxx-3958?

2) Does Vonage plan to offer vanity 800 numbers? I see they are assigning toll free numbers right now. Are they the "lesser" 888, 877, 8xx numbers?

3) I've got 1.5mbit / 8xxkbit DSL through an excellent provider with two static IP's. Is the "free" RTP300 in front of my broadband rounter a good fit for me?

4) What kind of bandwidth use are we talking here? How much of my link will be used for a voice call? Will it muck up my many SSH/Telnet sessions? I'm really suprised they do not mention this on their website.

3. maybe but you'll have to give more details than that. it's a fine device, where you put it is the issue.
4. when you got to vonage.com and click help, #1 of the top 10 most helpful articles answers that question.

Eeek. I can't even call up and order with a live person and say "come on man, hook me up with a good looking number?". Surely they are presented with a list, or can just hunt-peck for a good one.

That is almost a deal breaker for me, sadly.

np, sorry it may not work out for you, but I'm not sure if I would want my business phone service with a Voip provider.

Vonage has a true business division (rather than their Small Business division) which can handle requests like this. They'll likely ship you an Epygi device rather than the TI device as well. As far as bandwidth goes, factor in ~90kbps per voice channel in use if you're using the highest quality.

As far as using Voip for business communications, just about all of the Fortune 100 use Voip now. The technology in and of itself is mature & reliable. The connection between your ISP and the Voip provider remains the last part of the equation which needs improvement.

I'm not sure where you got the fortune 100 information, but using a company built Voip system and Vonage is like apples and oranges.

There's plenty of companies using Cisco ATA-186's, using SIP, and using some form of SIP provider to get to the PSTN. Granted, not everyone who uses Vonage is using Cisco IP phones and running their own PBXs, but it's fundamentally the same. FWIW, Vonage is using the Cisco IP phones with Vonage service in their offices & call centers.

It'd be nice to be able to keep everything in-house, but with telephones, at some point you'll have to connect to the outside world.
