PostPosted: Sun Mar 05, 2006 8:59 am    Post subject: Service Cancellation - What needs to be returned? Reply with quote Back to top

Hi,

I intend to cancel my Vonage service (because I don't use it anymore). I have two lines:

Line 1:
Purchased October 2003 - Cisco ATA 186 (sent by Vonage)

Line 2:
Purcased November 2005 - Linksys RTP300 (sent by Vonage)

If I cancel my service, I guess I will have to pay the $40 termination fee for line 2 because its not been a year yet. For line 1 there should be no termination charge.

Question is that will I need to return the routers to Vonage? If so, what's the penalty if I decide not to? I'm located outside the US, and it might cost more to ship than to pay whatever the penalty is.

Thanks for information.

with Vonage ypu dont have ANY contracts, its on a monthly basis. If your over the first 30-days (which is the trial period also), you can keep your equipment but u will be charged the non-refundable disconnect fee BUT, if your over 1yr they waive the disconnect fee Rolling Eyes

Well I managed to cancel Vonage service pretty painlessly (or as painlessly as could be expected).

I called and was on hold for around 20 mins or so, and then was transferred to a tech support guy who said he was handling calls from the cancellation queue because the cancellation department was backed up (no kidding).

He wanted to have someone from the cancellation department call me back, since he couldn't do cancellations. I explained to him that I'm located in Asia, and a callback from cancellations would come only in the middle of the night for me.

He said he'd have them call me back "shortly", so I asked him what that meant? 30 mins? 10 mins? He said "something like that".

Line was then silent for a bit, I assumed he was setting this up for me. 2 or 3 minutes later he came back and said that he had found someone who could cancel my account for me and he'd take care of it. He did so, and I got the email from Vonage confirming service termination.

I spent about 20 minutes on the phone with him, and all my lines were cancelled. Based on what I'm reading on the web and this forum about Vonage cancellations, I think this can be considered a "good" experience.

Vonage did not charge any termination fee, or ask for any equipment back.

An aside: He asked me what service I was switching to. I told him Skype. He asked me how to spell that. "Is it S-K-I-P-E?" I found that question pretty surprising for a Voip tech to ask. Though he was polite and helped me get the job done -- so I can't complain really.

Aside #2:
Question: Would I sign up again with Vonage in the future?
Answer: If I needed to, maybe. Though I wish they'd make it easier for those living outside the US and not require US Billing/Shipping addresses.

I believe when they expand to other areas, then customers will not need a US billing address.

Just a quick question, how did the service work for you from Asia? I have recently gotten a second line and was thinking of sending the RTP300 to my mom back home but was wondering if it will work with "cable" (not high-speed but faster than dial-up) internet?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Kaz.

There are some I know in Asia who have Vonage service. They have had no complaints. They say the line is crystal clear. I believe one of them has cable internet but I am not sure.

It works well from Hong Kong, Singapore and India. As long as your ISP supports PPPoE or DHCP (which in India is far from a given).

You need a billing address in whatever country your service is in. So if you have Vonage UK, you need a UK billing address, Vonage US, a US address, and so on.
