PostPosted: Sun Mar 05, 2006 8:33 am    Post subject: Two configs / two problems= no service / dropped calls Reply with quote Back to top

after 6 months of good performance/service, last two months have seen very unsatisfactory service. i have been through the forum rather extensively and here is my deal.
when config is modem=rtp31p2=pc, i will come home from work or down the hall in the morning to find phone light off and no internet, must reboot all. could go a day or two before fail, could go just an hour. when config is modem=befsr41=pc/rt31p2, calls are dropped, anywhere from 15 minutes to as little as 3 minutes into call. any call that is more than just a couple of minutes will drop without fail. i can say with certainty that on one occasion of dropped call, i still had internet, but on subsequent dropped calls, internet failed also, despite the rt31p2 being behind the befsr41.
i should point out that i went to the befsr41 config in effort to solve problem of loss experienced with just the rt31p2 config, as i had read about on forum. i have also been with tech support for Charter and monitored signal strength when logged in to webstar modem and all numbers are good (tx level/rx level/snr).
my two experiences with Vonage tech support on phone have been a waste. i take some time explaining problem and all the standard things done to fix it (reboot/reset/reconfig) only to be told by someone i can barely understand to reboot/reset/reconfig, as if they either didn't understand what i just told them, or know nothing technical at all and just reading off the card. highly frustrating.

here are all the pertinent info:
1. Your location BOONE NC
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc) CHARTER CABLE
3. Upload and download speeds ADVERTISED= 256k up/3megs down
4. Modem make and model WEBSTAR DPC2100
5. Type of Vonage adapter used RT31P2
6. Setup of Network** MODEM=RT31P2=PC ///// MODEM=LINKSYS BEFSR41=PC/RT31P2
7. Issue you are experiencing** LOSS OF SERVICE (BOTH PHONE & INTERNET) //// DROPPED CALLS

First question: Do you use P2P services like BitTorrent, etc?

ah, thanks for the response....

no, just plain old browsing and phoning....
in fact there is only the one computer in this scenario... only went to the second router config as an attempt to solve problem.

Hmm. that's a toughie.

Do you experience any sort of drops with your computer hooked up (no routers in the equation)?

I'm trying to figure out why it's dropping, and the only thing that comes to mind is a bad DHCP lease renewal (your cable provider gives your devices a single IP address, which by default lasts 1 day. 12 hours (50% of lease period) after receiving the IP address, your attached device should be asking for a renewal of that lease. Sometimes, that renewal fails, and the unit retries at 75% and again at 100% to renew.

You can try manually renewing the DHCP lease every 10 hours or less, and if the problem goes away permanently, or if you have a lot of problems sometimes getting the DHCP lease renewed, then I'd call Charter and ask them what's up with that...

Can you pin the disconnect down to a time of day?

Do you need to spoof the MAC address on either router, or does Charter allow you to change MAC addresses?

Have you tried turning off any firewalls in the BEFSR41 when it is out front? Some routers, when faced with a Vonage call, see the huge number of UDP packets and assume the network is under a flood attack (Denial Of Service attack) and react accordingly, blocking the packets.

Unfortunately, without a good log of what is going on, it's hard to say exactly why the connection drops. I think the drops to your Vonage calls when behind the BEFSR41 are a separate issue to your general connection drops.

What model modem do you have? Is it something your cable company will swap out for you (rental) to diagnose a possible failure?

Have you checked the "basics"? Clean power/UPS? Patch cables firmly seated and free of any contaminants (including your cable wire)? Ventilation with low dust? I know these are unlikely, but worth a check...

Oh, one other thing.

With just the Vonage router (Modem->RT31P2->PC), try disabling its built-in DNS Proxy, and see if that helps:

http://vonage.nmhoy.net/dnsproxy.html

These instructions are for the RTP300 and WRTP54G, but I think the basics are the same for the RT31P2...

A way to test for bad proxy is to try pinging an IP address, rather than a URL. For example, www.yahoo.com resolves to a number of IP addresses, one of which is 68.142.197.81

So if a PING www.yahoo.com does NOT work (with a "cannot find host"), and a PING 68.142.167.81 DOES work, then chances are you have a DNS issue.

You can also run NSLOOKUP (NSLOOKUP www.yahoo.com) which will try to do a DNS lookup and give you an error message if DNS is not working for you.

never experienced any loss of internet prior to Vonage.
never experienced any loss of internet or phone service for six months with Vonage
original config was webstar dcp2100 cable modem to rt31p2 and for six months no drops or disconnect, although phone audio quality was not great.
then since early january i would wake up in the morning (4am) and find phone light was off and internet was down. reboot fixed. sometimes i would come home from work in the afternoon (2pm or so) and find same thing. that would make your lease suggestion seem plausible.
in effort to get around this, i read on forum about people using a seperate router to allow rt31p2 to just function as phone adapter. added the befsr31 between webstar and rt31p2. with this config, calls get dropped in progress, anywhere from 3 minutes to 15 or so minutes into call.

the befsr41 has a screen (Dynamic Routing) that gives option of ticking "gateway" or "router". i would assume that firewall is active in "gateway" mode, and that is what is ticked. should i try "router" instead?
by turning off the befsr41 firewall (gateway/router choice?) that might stop the dropped calls? would seem the befsr41 would decide it was under attack much earlier than 15 minutes into a phone call, but thats just my novice thinking.

i know nothing about the MAC address, except one shows in the befsr41 and before i put it in line, one showed in the rt31p2 (can't look at rt31p2 right now because i've not set up remote admin to allow access to rt31p2 while behind befsr41. haven't messed with it as of yet because i have also reset all units a number of times while dealing with this)

while i've had cable tv at this location for years, cable internet is new as of july 05, and the feed for internet breaks off from where the cable comes into the house, before any of the tv wiring (cable from street goes to box on side of house, splits from there to go one way to my puter and the other way to my tv)

all cables are well seated, dust is everywhere but i try hard to keep it all clean, good ventilation.

thanks for your help...

pinging www.yahoo.com got decent results:
request timed out
reply from 68.142.226.36 bytes=32 time=35ms TTL=52
reply from 68.142.226.36 bytes=32 time=34ms TTL=52
reply from 68.142.226.36 bytes=32 time=34ms TTL=52

pinging 68.142.167.81 timed out on all attempts

NSLOOKUP www.yahoo.com came back with 8 ip addresses, so it seems to be working

will look into dns proxy on rt31p2 soon...
thanks...

just thought of something...
are you suggesting that i turn off the dns proxy in the rt31p2 then put it back behind the befsr41? or leave the befsr41 out of the config afterwards?

Leave the BEFSR41 out of the config for now, so all of your clients go straight to your ISP's DNS servers to look up names.

What you see as "internet failure" may be no more than DNS failure, but since just about everything on the Internet uses friendly names, without DNS, there isn't a lot going on. Wink
