PostPosted: Sat Mar 04, 2006 5:47 pm    Post subject: Vonage for an apartment building? Reply with quote Back to top

I have a few small apartment buildings in Minnesota. Most are about 14 units each building. I have been thinking of including wi-fi for my tenants. It also occured to me to offer Vonage as a package.

Has anyone done this? My concerns is what does it require to offer the wi-fi and phone with Vonage equipment. Also is it practical/possible for each tenant to have their own phone number through the system. And my last concern is can they rack up other charges that will effect my account.

Ultimately what I want to offer them is free wifi and Vonage as part of rent. However I do not want to create a huge pain in the ***!

Any thoughts/experiences?

free wifi, yeah, Vonage, probably not. that would more than likely cause a lot more headache than anything.

I agree with Reebok. Give them the wi-fi and knock $25 off the rent. Let them use that to contract with Vonage directly.

As to your question about phone numbers, if you did provide the Vonage service, you'd almost certainly have to do it by providing each with an adapter that you have registered with Vonage, and that would, indeed, give each his own number. Since you would control the accounts, you could turn off international access, which is the only "pay extra" that I know of that Vonage offers. Of course, if you bought basic 500 minute accounts, you would have to pay for excess minutes.

It is an interesting idea but I wouldn't want my landlord in charge of my phone.

411 also costs, though it may be blocked with intl blocking also, not 100% sure on that one.

I wouldn't recommend it, unless you are willing to do some big time research into who provides your High Speed internet access. Since Vonage depends on a solid Internet connection, you would want to know things like, how much load is on the node you are on, and does Voip work well with that ISP in that area. I think it would be best to leave the traditional and Vonage option open to tenants, but what you CAN do, which would be cool, is offer to disconnect them from the telephone company at the box outside the building. This would allow them to use their apartment wiring with Vonage, which would be great if a landlord supported that. Just my $.02.

And how about 900 calls? Just thought of that one.

I agree with the others that offering Vonage as part of the rent is probably not a good idea. However, I was curious: How did you intend on hooking up their WiFi connection to Vonage? That would be quite an interesting setup. It might be better to run a cable to each apartment. Cabling may be a little costly but so is outdoor WiFi equipment. Also, many people with desktop computers don't have a wireless network adapter. Most laptops have them nowdays, however.

If you go with the cable connection, you could then recommend Vonage to them, maybe even get the referral credit if they still offer that. That way if they want to be able to make International calls, they can because the service will be in their own name.

That part's easy -- wireless bridge... The only difficulty with this method is making sure you have a decent signal and that you have enough wireless access points around to carry the bandwidth needed. I was on Vonage last night for a few hours with a wireless bridge & didn't have any trouble with it.
