I have often commented in these forums, that simple speed tests found on this and other sites are simply not accurate enough to determine your specific line problems. Latency is a bigger issue than simply speed.
The problem in non-techie terms. If you drive a car and go on a 1 mile trip and have to stop at 3 traffic lights but hit the accelerator and floor it between lights -- your avg speed will appear quite high! Voip though hates traffic lights and would rather drive a leisurely 20 MPH but miss all of the traffic lights.
Brix Systems, who makes test equipment for Voip, has launched a test Voip system that measures latency and jitter. It also gives your connection a MOS score of between 1 and 5 for overall Voip readiness. You will need Sun Java Virtual Machine installed to make it work.
Here's the link ...

I'm also 4.4 from Boston and San Jose. Additionally, the detailed results show zero latency. |

I've been trying to run the test for about a half hour now, but keep getting:
Test Failed There was a network problem talking to the server.

If you have your MOT VT10005 connected between your router and cable/dsl modem. This test will fail.
Due to the ports that the MOT reserves, the testyourvoip.com site will generally fail. Thus to see your service quality, you'll may have to temporaily disconnect and re-jig your set-up.
BTW .. latency/jitter will vary during a 24 hour period, most residential services hit peak activity at 7 p.m. local time - this early evening timeslot is the best time to see the 'worst' your network quality is. |
