Hi Guys,
I'm frustrated with Vonage and there seemingly dense customer/technical service. I'm a first time Vonage customer and am having trouble getting through to them. Maybe I'm wrong (.. and dense!), and would like to get some help from the more knowledgeable forum members.

First of all here's my setup:
ISP: BSNL in Bangalore
Adapter: Linksys PAP2 Adapter
Modem+Router: Huawei SmartAX MT841.

Initially I there was only the modem, and the PC had the IP address assigned. So when I bought the adapter, I had registered the adapter and its MAC address. Subsequently I bought a Huawei SmartAX MT841 DSL modem with a 4 port router built in.

I called up Vonage to give them the MAC address of the router (which I believe is what Vonage actually sees).
They tried to register that MAC address and their system wouldn't recognize it as a valid MAC address. They said they have a database of standard/approved Vonage devices and they'll allow only those MAC addresses to be registered.

Am I being stupid or am I doing something wrong here? Which MAC address should I register with Vonage? The adapter or the router?

I've been a member for over a month and am desperately trying to get a dial tone! Would someone kindly help clarify this issue? What exactly am I supposed to ask Vonage?

Thanks in advance.
Ashwin.

I did search through the forum for issues concerning MAC address swaps. Apologize if I've re-posted an already discussed topic.

Vonage only cares about the MAC of the Vonage device. As long as they can "see" your device, they don't care how you make it available. Why would you think they care about your router? They aren't an ISP, after all.

SInce the adapter is inside the 192.168 subnet they won't be able to see the adapter directly.
So I thought I'd have to have the router's MAC address registered as the Vonage service sees the router first.

Am I doing something wrong? In trying to address visibility issues How would I go about getting the adapter to work?

Thanks for your help!
Ashwin.

The PAP does not care that it is behind a router. It will "call home" on it's own, and as long as the MAC is registered to you, and the account is ok, it will communicate. The PAP says, "Hey I have an Internet connection, I'm going to try and call home." It does, then Vonage says, "Hi, how you doing, your MAC looks ok, do you want some new firmware?" The PAP says, "No that's ok, I have the updated version, I just want to connect to a server and make calls." Then Vonage says, "Sure, here ya go, have a good one."

Dave: Thanks so much for the lucid explanation Smile
I was thinking on the lines of "How do I go about adding another PC to my network" and tried to do the same with the adapter.

Didn't realize the adapter called home (thought it was the other way round and hence my misplaced suspicion about visibility).

Vonage, at this point of time, does have my adapter's MAC address. But I'm still not getting any dial tone. Guess it's something else I'll have to check up on.

Thanks once again!

Cheers,
Ashwin.

Hey no problem, it can be confusing sometimes, so a little "explanation" like that can clear it up. As for the dialtone, I think we need the advice of someone with the same kind of setup as you in India, just to make sure everything is configured right in both devices.

Do you have the ability to configure your Huawei SmartAX MT841 modem/router? If you do, perhaps you can try putting the pap2 in the DMZ mode for now to see if it will call home?

By the way, did it work before you got the modem/router? If so, then putting it in the DMZ will get it working again.
