The Hawking and Streamengine in general, only manages upstream packets, which are related only to your router, having nothing to do with the ISP. It sits between the modem and router, shaping the traffic it passes to your ISP.

I've used the Hawking device with Cable modem service from both Cox in Virginia and currently Time Warner in North Carolina.

It has worked with both without any issues.

I don't want to make a blanket statement, but I'm fairly sure they work regardless of the type of high speed service you have.

Hope this helps some.

Thanks for the HBB1 Info!

I've assigned my Vonage phone's MAC address the highest setting for QoS in my wireless router but now I'll also take a look at getting a dedicated QoS device in the WAN path. Very Happy

Somms -

While you can certainly invest in a Hawking, I don't think you need one. You are one very small step away from making that router work for you, I think.

The QoS on the WRT54GS, which you have in your screenshot, works well. However, you have to set the upstream bandwidth manually, and I see from your screenshot that you have not done this.

Setting it is simple. With QoS turned OFF in the router, do a standard speed test at something like dslreports.com or whatever speed test you prefer. Write down the number you get for "upstream" or "upload" speed. If it is given in kilobytes, multiply it by eight to get kilobits.

Now, multiply that number by 0.9, switch the "Upstream Bandwidth" to "Manual", and enter the result into the field.

For example, I get about 215 kbps tested upstream bandwidth, so my setting is around 195:

If you really want to make that router shine, you may want to consider aftermarket firmware, like HyperWRT Thibor ( http://www.thibor.co.uk/ ). But the QoS in the native firmware is pretty good stuff.

I gave the HBB1 a try to see if it could solve my dropped call
problems. After I installed it I was kind of frustrated by the fact I couldn't
run any type of Voip test from my computer to demonstrate a difference. testyourvoip.com and others just didn't seem to show any consistent difference comparing with and without it.

In the end I just had to just start making calls and see what happens. So far so good, the calls seem much more stable. I just completed a long distance call over 1 hour (in the afternoon, when most of my drops occur) with no problems.

The trendnet TEW-611BRP 802.11g Mimo wireless router at Newegg uses the same Speedengine chipset as the standalone hawking/Dlink devices. It's on sale at Newegg for $47.99 after rebate, free shipping.

mogulman,
Are you having success with the TEW-611BRP? Mine isn't working well for Voip. Seems okay otherwise, but I have intermittent choppy voice when I put this router in my network (direct swap for the WRT54G) with or without the StreamEngine turned on.

ChrisFix wrote:
Well here is an interesting bit of information (to me at least Lol ) ...I have a Linksys WRT54G v4 router and the Hawking HBB1 that I've had good results with. I'm running a 3rd party firmware and have a simple QoS that sets priority to the port that my PAP2 adapter is on. Without the Hawking HBB1 I was having bad outgoing quality when streaming my Slingbox. After adding the HBB1, I couldn't tell that I was streaming - works impressively for this particular setup. My ISP is TWC RR with their Premium service 8M down / 512K up.

I purchased the Trendnet TEW-611BRP because it has the same Ubicom StreamEngine QoS chipset built in and is a MIMO router. I was happy to spend the $47 net that this cost, thinking I could eliminate one box from my LAN (the HBB1). Surprisingly, this setup has performed very poorly for me - lots of choppy voice, particularly outgoing (with nothing else significant running on the network), but even some incoming, which I've never experienced before - after all I have an 8M pipe down.

Swapped back to the WRT54G and HBB1 combo, and it is completely better.

I'm a little stunned at the difference the router combo can make. If you have the Trendnet TEW-611BRP working well with Vonage, I'd love to hear how you've set up the QoS - I simply selected the option to turn it on and let it automatically setup the StreamEngine. That is clearly not sufficient for my setup. Are there any extra settings that make this router work better? I want to use this router as it is sleek looking and eliminates yet another network device, but I can't with the QoS I'm getting.

tried looking at the trendware site pdf but didn't see awhole lot of info on the QOS. Site just didn't show that tab. Are you able to assign the mac add of the V device a high priority?
Also,
try turning off SPI.

Trendware calls it Traffic Shaping, and it is meant to automatically detect Voip packets and prioritize them. The QoS chip is the same Ubicom Stream Engine that is in the Hawking (which works great).

There isn't port or mac priority, but they have optional traffic shaping rules that I honestly don't understand how they would be configured. Bottom line is you shouldn't need to configure them with this router.

The issue that I'm having with this router goes beyond the QoS setup. With nothing running on the LAN it gives choppy outgoing voice - the same with and without the QoS running. There is something that isn't compatible with either the PAP2 or it is just not working correctly. The traffic shaping router is made for gamers and Voip, so you wouldn't expect Voip to suck. The same setup, except the WRT54G plugged into the exact same connections is perfect. I have a ticket in with Trendnet Level 2 support who are supposed to get back to me - we'll see if that works like Vonage L2 support does... Wink

No, but it would be useless to me without wireless.
