PostPosted: Thu Mar 02, 2006 7:16 pm    Post subject: ? Re Porting Phone Number and Getting Rid of SBC... Reply with quote Back to top

Today was the day that SBC was supposed to port my 10-year-old phone number to Vonage. I've been under the impression that my SBC phone service would be terminated once my number was ported. Well it seems that my phone number has been ported, as I've turned off SBC call forwarding, and calls to my phone number ring on my Vonage line. But I still have a dial tone on my SBC line, and I can dial out. How can I possibly have SBC service when this line has no phone number? I wish I'd realized this before 5:00pm today, because now I'll have to wait to call SBC till tomorrow.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what's going on?

TIA....

This happened with my LNP too but only for about 12 hours, then the phone (comcast digital) went dead. I would not be too worried.

Very Happy Thanks for the reassurance. I just received a message from Vonage telling me my LNP transfer has been completed, and that within the next 12 hours, my SBC service will go off. It also said to reset the VT1005, which I've done several times today due to DHCP issues on my router's DHCP server. (I finally gave the VT a static IP.) But I recycled the VT anyway, just to be safe. The message from Vonage also said that final completion of the transfer wil typically result in down time of a couple hours. No biggie, I have my Vonage line ring to my cell if it's not available. I'm really looking forward to seeing if I can get Vonage to work through my house wiring.

Anyway, thanks!

Well I just checked, and there's no longer a dial tone on my SBC line. I guess tomorrow I may take a look in the box on the side of the house to see what's involved in connecting Vonage to my house wiring. I was in that box years ago, as I had to connect the DSL loop to the yellow and black phone wires. (I had dedicated SDSL.) Now I have Comcast. Between Comcast and Vonage, I'm very pleased!

In other words, once the SBC (I also have SBC POTS) line goes dead, you don't need to call SBC to discontinue service?

I'm in northeast Ohio; my number porting is scheduled to take affect Monday, March 13.

Thanks!

Yep, my SBC service went off at midnight after my number was ported. The next business day, I got an email from SBC saying that my service had been turned off. I don't miss 'em a bit. Wink
