I just noticed that when I make a call from my Vonage number, the callID on the recipient's phone displays: 'unavailable' for my name, but does display my telephone number.

I am concerned because 'unavailable' usually is associated with a telemarketer (which I am not). I was wondering what I can do to get my business name to display correctly.

Some facts...
I've had the service for over a month. I have a business account and my business name and my name are registered with Vonage. I am calling from and to the 919 area code.

Thanks Moto. Does anyone know if the caller ID reporting is handled by Vonage or the local telephone network of the receiver?

Vonage has the info, and the local telephone company
accessess the information.

Telephone companies clearly know the 'name' to display when the caller is a customer. However, things get much more tricky when you call from one phone company to another.

A number of 3rd party DB services exist to supply Caller Name information. Many telephone companies 'dip' these databases when they can't resolve the name information.

For the 500 hundredth time -- Vonage is NOT a telephone company and the telephone number you have from Vonage is actually 'owned' (in a relative sense) by a real telephone company (a CLEC). This real telephone company would have to 'report' to the 3rd party services the name information. This is more work and they'd probably want to charge Vonage to do it and Vonage would have to supply them your name info.

My guess is this like so many issues will ultimately be worked out -- but for the short term we're simply out of luck.

Caller ID is about the only sticky point that I have with Vonage. Everything else has worked great. It just seams like since I joined Vonage I get 10 times more Unavailable Names and Numbers than before. I used to be able to count on "Unavailable" = Telemarketer, but now I need to answer all of my calls because it may just be a friend. Also, I wish that Vonage had a Private Number Block feature. If I am calling someone and taking their time I feal that it is polite to show my name and number. I expect the same consideration in return. Hence, Private Number Block.

Even though I HATE Vonage I will reply cuz I know the answer.

ckoehncke is correct that Vonage does not own the number and is at the mercy of the local telco they buy their service from but I have to add that this is only in reference to the E911 database. Vonage purchases PRIs from the local telcos back to their switch and therefore can out put what ever they choose to as far as the ANI (caller ID) goes but not 911. IF they wanted to show the whitehouse 555-555-5555 they could. I guess they are just too dumb to figure it out.
