I think that's is the problem with the MTA constantly rebooting. It's behind a Linsys BEFSX41 router that's set to PPPoE. MTA was getting IP dynamically but it seems to need a static IP assigned to it.
How to I do this and what IP do I choose?
Do I need to do anything to the LinkSys settings?
Newbie to Voip Thanks in advance.

You can assign the IP to any number you aren't otherwise using that has the same netmask numbers that you are using already.
So let's say that the Linksys is handing out 168.1.1.100 with a net mask of 255.255.255.0. That means that all addresses have to have 168.1.1.XXX. You can pick any number from 1 to 254 (well, that's the best range anyway) for XXX as long as no one else is using it. In addition, the LinkSys DHCP server probably has a range (or a start address and a count). So if the Linksys is handing out .100 to .116, for example, you need to avoid those numbers.
Also, some DHCP servers have a way to map a specific MAC address to an IP address. So if you know the MTA's MAC (printed underneath it, or read it from the DHCP server's screen in the Linksys) you can force DHCP to always give it the same IP which means you don't have to change anything on the MTA.
Why do you need a static IP? The only reason I know of is if you are going to forward ports or set the DMZ and you want it to go to the same address every time. |

This should explain the situation. Stability is lousy. I will eventually be adding 2 more computers to this network so that's why the router. I wanted to get it stable before adding anything else.

Have you tryed putting your MTA in front of your router? Vonage has beafed up the MTA Firmware lately and you might find out that alot of your headaches will go away if you just put your MTA in front of you router like Vonage recommends. That is what works for me. |
