I'm running XP Pro with a motorola ATA behind a LinkSys BEFSX41 router. About every 30 minutes the ATA is rebooting itself and my internet connection is gone.

Here is a better explaination.

XP Pro SP 1. BEFSX41 router with the MTA behind it. 1.45.7 firmware in the router. The thing works fine then about every 30-60 minutes, the thing bliks in a pattern indicating it is registering with the network. I've been on the phone with these people all day. They don't seem to have a clue. I'm at the end of my rope with this issue.
I have PPPoE connection with SBC. Router is set for that. MTA is set to obtain IP automatically.

Should I assign an IP to the MTA? And if so, how do I do this??

I am fortunate enough not to have PPPoE, but I wonder if your ISP drops your connection after so much inactivity and SIP packets don't register as activity? As an experiment, what happens if you put a Web page that automatically refreshes (say www.cnn.com) up. Does this solve your problem?

If it does, see if you router has a "keep alive" check box to keep you always connected.

If not, then I dunno....

I don't think that's right. The MTA requests an IP address from a DHCP server which in this case is the Linksys (and in the other case is the ISP's server). I'm sure the box does something with Vonage's servers, but it isn't getting an IP from them. I just thought it might be possible that the SIP packets (which I think are all UDP) are not enough to reset the ISP's keep alive timer. But I don't know that.

I have a setup simalar to yours. RCA Cable Modem -> Linksys BEFSR41 running firmware version 1.45.7 -> Moto VT1005 -> PC. I have read that things get tricky when you run the MTA behind a Linksys Router because of the whole port forewarding issue. You may try to hook your system up like mine is to avoid that. I have a cable modem but I understand that setting the MTA up for PPPoE is pretty straight foreward. That way you will also get QoS, for what that is worth. Cool
