I've had Comcast for about five years now and have never had too many issues. After reading many of the posts here and doing some speed tests all seemed OK. However I noticed other Comcast customers getting download speeds of 6Mbps. Hmmm my tests were showing 1.5Mbps. So I called Comcast today, they ran a few checks on my modem (some kind of RCA) and said "your modem needs to be exchanged". OK so I went down to the local Comcast store exchanged the old one for a new Motorola SB 5101 and now my download speed is screaming!

I never had any problems with my Vonage service and all is still well, just never realized they were offering that kind of speed and/or that my modem needed to be replaced. Thanks to the education I'm getting from all of you I now have even better service!!! Smile

Comcast upped my speed to 8 megs and even lowered my monthly cost to $29.99, and I'm not even a cable customer of theirs. Very Happy Very Happy

I get it "renewed" every 6 months.

I call Comcast's customer retention # and choose the option that says you wish to cancel your service. You'll be routed to a customer service rep. to whom you can tell them something like, "Verizon just contacted me with an offer that's better and less expensive than yours. They're offering me high-speed fiber optic Internet service for $29.99 per month. You're much higher than that, so I'm switching."

The rep. will either ask you what you want or will make some suggestions. If the former, tell them if they can match Verizon's price, you'll stay; otherwise, you're gone. If the latter, don't accept their suggestions until they get to a price point you like.

Regarding my speed at that price--I had been at 6 megs and actually got a flyer from Comcast telling me, "at no additional cost we have increased our Internet speed for those customers of ours who are Internet and cable subscribers." Well, I'm only an Internet customer of theirs and not cable, so I called to complain that I didn't feel I should have to pay extra for faster speeds just because I didn't have their cable AND Internet. So, the rep. upped my speed and gave it all to me for $29.99 per month. She said to call her back in 6 months and ask for the promotional price again. I'll do that as soon as I notice my invoice go up.

Here in CT Comcast has no real (speed) competition so they know we can't call with the old "lower my bill or I'll switch" because there is no one to switch to! Keep up the good work though Smile

Wow... I'm at $55, too, I think. I got the $10 extra speed boost, but I'm not really sure I needed it.

I wish we had Verizon FIOS here! I would switch in a heartbeat! I don't like Comcast much, but it's the fastest game in town.

Comcast has been reliable for me but their pricing has bothered me for a long time. I'm paying $57.00/month for 384kbps up and 6Mbps down and I'm NOT a cable customer. I don't watch telly very often, if at all.

I always thought their prices were steep. Armed with UMP25's info, I will be calling to negotiate.

Say Vic, if you don't actually have FIOS in your area, but Comcast still gives you a discount, let me know! I'll try the same thing...

I wish I had more options! Denver/Aurora is horribly connected!
