I have also been having fax issues. The HP3200 I have was not working, so I got a Brother MFC-3220c as well at Staples, and it too is reporting bad line quality. I have a ticket open with Vonage but I am wondering if this is a Brother thing, or just coincidence.

The HP would just die, at least the Brother says "NG: bad line quality".
I will monkey with the settings tonight.

Vonage suggested I get a DSL filter for the fax, I told them if I need one then they should be supplying it, because their docs say that faxing works fine, even on the voice line, and mine never did so I upgraded to a business account with fax.

You may want to check out http://www.dslreports.com for the Voip forum. There are quite a few folks there who are successful at faxing. I have a feeling it has something to do with the fax machine itself. Some are just better at it.

Problem persists. Vonage is now blaming latency on my line, which is optimumonline. Not sure what to do next, dump them or Vonage?

Other choice: use an online fax client via email. E-fax is one of them.

Looking at the dslreports Voip forum, some people have reported good luck with putting a dsl filter in their fax line "backwards," I think that improved my success with faxing, and it also seems that using *99 as a dial prefix helps.

I guess it's hit and miss. IMHO it's not ready for mission (or business) truly critical applications yet.

Just read the posts on DSL on backwards filters. I'm going to try it. I did find that once I went into the HPG85 system with the instructions Vonage sent me and lowered the baud rate, if I used *99 it would error. I get better results now without *99. I'll try the backwards filter and try to send a big fax someplace soon. It's anything over two or three pages that goes haywire (and always when it's important).

thanks!

efax will cost me an extra $20/mo, though I guess I could drop the pricing level of my Vonage line.
I'm an early adopter, it just pisses me off that this stuff won't work.

I saw the posts about the reverse filter, I will check it out.
I can't drop the baud rate on my fax and most machines don't have that option. Also, you shouldn't have to.

Danix:

FYI, I didn't think i could drop my baud rate either but the Vonage support people sent me a set of instructions to go into a setup menu that is not, I guess, normally user accessible. You may give them a call and see if it works. Of course if the backwards DSL filter works with the lower baud, I may try it with the higher baud too and see if I can stay stable with more speed.

My Efax is $12.95 with unlimited incoming. Just depends how much outgoing you have as to what it would cost total. If I have to send a long fax with Efax because I can't get it to send from the fax machine, it can run as much as $2 for one fax.

I'll see if I still have the email, but they may not be the same for your model. Do you have a HP G85? If so, they'll be right!

Man, I thought I saved it in my Vonage folder in Outlook, but it's gone. I probably accidentally archived it. I'll have to email them for it again myself.

Oops. As soon as I gave up and posted, I found it. Now, caution to anybody who tries this -- if it's not your model and it doesn't work, DON'T BLAME ME!!!

I recall the menus were not exactly the same for th G85 but close enough that I got through the process.
