PostPosted: Fri Feb 24, 2006 10:40 am    Post subject: My own test of Comcast/Vonage Reply with quote Back to top

I conducted some tests last night of a few different setups to see if there was any performance difference. My basic conclusion is that the setup I was using already (Modem-->Linksys WRT54G-->VOIP Linksys RTP300) was the best I could do. The worst connection I had was Modem-->VOIP Linksys RTP300-->Linksys WRT54G.

One of the reasons why I did this is because I thought maybe Comcast could "see" that I was a Vonage user by the IP address. What do Vonage IP addresses usually start with? Interestingly, I had a different IP address with each setup.

I have a Comcast line that usually gets ~6MB down and ~384 up.

Does anyone have a "best" connection? Is there a way to set things up to "mask" that I am a Vonage user for those of us who believe in Comcast vs. Vonage conspiracies?

That's standard function. Usually, cable gives out an IP address that is correlated with a MAC address. So when you renewed your lease with a different MAC, the modem issued you a different IP.

If you want to put the RTP300 out front but "hide" the fact that it's a Vonage router, simply clone the MAC address from anything behind it, or make one up. There's a sub-tab for "MAC ADDRESS CLONE" on the main setup screen.

I suspect the WRT54G is doing better "out front" because it's simply a better router, and the RTP300 is probably doing better behind another router simply because there is less load on it (so it can "focus" on voice quality). That's what I've found with my WRT54G/WRTP54G combination.

hmmmmm interesting theory. To add to the questions of this theory.

Lets say the isp is changing things with all customers, but only affects the ones who use Vonage? Im asking because in one of my complaint calls to comcast they asked me which Voip im using Vonage or comcast....... I did NOT say I was using a Voip, he knew

If they can tell which customers are using Vonage by there ip how can it be masked when using just a wired router.

Well, there are three possible ways to identify a Vonage customer:

1. MAC address
2. Connection to Vonage SIP server
3. Packet types and load

1 can be easily bypassed by spoofing/cloning a MAC, 2 can only work if you know all the servers, and 3 will only tell you if it's Voip, not if it's Vonage per se.

I suspect they are using #3, and maybe putting in some "special routing" rules for people not using their Voip service? That is, assuming you believe in the conspiracy? Wink

I dunno - I'm on a different ISP, but I'll be travelling down to Florida in a month and taking my WRTP54G with me, and I'll be in Comcast Country for a week. We'll see. My father gets a 4.4 on all the tests.

Hmm...this is getting interesting... I'm now starting to have problems on my Verizon DSL line w/Vonage. Testmyvoip shows decent scores (4.0-4.3) but what I'm hearing sounds like a terrible amount of jitter. At the same time, traceroutes to Vonage don't look so hot, especially on the Vonage side of the connection. I'll apologize in advance for having such boring router names on my network. Razz

Check out hop #13:

#12 makes some sense, router set not to respond to pings, BUT, dropped packets on 13.

I just remotely connected to one of my Comcast connections and am seeing similar results:
