First, I LIKE the F1000 so far. I have just begun using it internationally with my Linksys WTR54GS Travel Router (non-broadcasting SSID, WPA encryption). This allows me to use it in my hotel room, even though the hotel's for-fee, wired broadband service requires a "log-in" acknowledgement via a web browser (which I supply from my Palm TX). Once that's done, my F1000 connects to my WTR54GS and then registers w Vonage. Works.

HOWEVER, my F1000 also spontaneously de-registers from Vonage while remaining connected to the access point. It then tries endlessly to register with Vonage, but can't. I have to either 1) power the phone off and on or 2) go to Wi-Fi config and select AP and then my WTR54GS settings and (again) set this AP configuration to "active." The latter causes the F1000 to disconnect from the AP and reconnect, and then it registers.

LOSING the registration renders the handset a useless piece of junk until that is resolved. I've had the registration remain "active" for hours, or sometimes only minutes before a reset is required.

Have OTHERS run into this problem?

There have been reports of the "unlocked" F1000 losing connection to some WPA APs in some environments - which are being investigated. This seems to be a similar case, though maybe not if the phone is actually still connected to the AP (can you ping it from the palm?).

As a temporary solution, you may want to try just using WEP (also non-broadcasting) and see if that resolves the trouble. If you put in a random SSID, plus WEP and don't broadcast, the AP should be pretty hard for anyone to get into.

Thanks for the reply.

The F1000 ISN'T losing connection to the AP. So I'm disinclined to change to a less secure encryption. But, sounds as if your suggestion WOULD be appropriate for an AP connection issue.

I MAY have stumbled upon the root of the issue: if I leave the F1000 connected to the A/C adapter, it does NOT lose registration. This to me suggests that there is a power management issue with MY F1000, and perhaps with a batch of them. I had previously played with those setting trying to fix the problem, but it made no difference. I'll follow this issue and see...

BTW, I did NOT try to ping the phone from my TX, but just now (with it registered) I WAS able to log in to it via the TX web browser.

I have the exact same problem that you have had. I have only noticed the problem with my home WAP (WAP54G) which I run with broadcast SSID and WPAv1. Since I've only had the phone for a few weeks now, I've only noticed the problem while I am at home, but I have used the phone on several other WAPs (all of which have been open/unsecured).

I'm trying your fix by leaving it plugged in to see if it fixes my problem as well.

Well, further use indicates that the POWER seems unrelated to the de-registration. The de-registration seems to be site (e.g., hotel) specific. It may have to do with how the network is configured or with more general Quality of Service (QoS) issues. Overall, the phone seems to work and I'm relatively content with it. I've had great service on really primitive Wi-Fi setups and poor on what seem to be very good setups. I'm not sure what all the variables are.

Complaints: Volume on handset is low and there's no provision to log into a wireless network which requires a user ID and PW to be entered interactively. Netgear seems to have solved that problem with their pre-announced offering.

One thing that I have done in the meantime is set up a second access point in my house that runs with a totallly different SSID, but the same security(WPAv1) and passphrase. Since I have it dedicated to my phone, I have locked the rate to 802.11b only instead of mixed. So far, all looks like it is running well.

I did have a workaround for the problem of being stuck on registering by going back through WiFi Config, selecting my saved SSID, and selecting Activate again. This fixed the hangup every time.

I am an IT professional (CCNA certified) and do this for a living (but I don't claim to know everything Smile), so I have a pretty good idea of the different variables that are involved. I had initially suspected that the registering hangup was due to a delay in receiving an IP address, but I can't confirm it without better logging on the phone.

I do have QoS setup on my network and making phone calls from multiple lines has never been a problem, so it's safe to say that my problem hasn't been a bandwidth, latency, or QoS problem. I have a 10Mb/1Mb connection, so I'm good there. My WAP is the Linksys WAP54G, so Netgear doesn't apply there. I also have low volume on my handset as well but I have had great service when it is connected to my WAP.

The problem is very intermittent as it can work fine for several hours and then hangup every minute for a period of time. I think I'm just going to go with the second WAP with a separate SSID for a solution for now. Let me know if you find out anything else
