PostPosted: Mon Apr 12, 2004 4:41 pm    Post subject: Little bursts of white noise...anyone else? Reply with quote Back to top

I have noticed that if I speak at the same time that the other party is speaking, the system generates a subtle burst of white noise where the other party’s voice should be. This only happens if I speak while there is speech or noise on the other end of the line. For example, I had a conversation with someone who was listening to music in the background. Each time I would start speaking I would hear the burst of white noise.

Am I the only one hearing this? Could I have a bad MTA?

Hummm...that seems to sound worse!

Do you hear the noise bursts that I described?

I appreciate your thought, but I have tried with several different phones and I get this noise artifact with them all.

I have read of "comfort noise" elsewhere on this forum...I wonder if this is what I am hearing. If so, it seems to be having the opposite effect on me.

If no other person is hearing this noise, this seems to reinforce my original thought that there must be a problem with my MTA...it can't seem to generate a message-waiting stutter tone either...

Welcome to the 'art' of Codec development!

While data guys have scoffed that voice is a piece of cake to handle. The reality is many things do and can happen during a 2 way human conversation.

Most voice conversations are 1-way (1 person speaking) and there is a noticable (at least in computer time frames) pause between when one person stops speaking and the other starts.

The Codec has a complex job -- while YOU are speaking, it actual echos back at a lower volume your own voice to your receiver. When no one is speaking each end generates 'comfort noise' which is basic white noise so that you don't engage in this "did we get disconnected conversation".

The problem become when everyone starts talking the codec has to make a decision on what do to -- the case you're pointing out is a glitch whereby the Codex generates some loud white noise.

Certain tone speakers can confuse the Codec in it's behavior.

While Codecs have come a long way from 10 years ago .. they're still not perfect and you're experiencing it. Unfortunately, you could try different settings but I fear you may still experience this occassionally.

Ckoehncke,

I think you may hit upon the root of the problem. I think the fundamental flaw is the assumption that telephone conversations are half-duplex. In my experience, people naturally start talking before their conversation partner finishes. The more familiar two people are with one another, the more this tends to happen, because one can easily anticipate the finish of the other’s sentence. And of course, there are always interjections, even when the parties are not well acquainted.

It may well be true that most of a given conversation is comprised of one person speaking while the other listens, at least in terms of the percentage of the whole conversation, but I submit that virtually all voice conversations also involve two people speaking at the same time during some portions of the conversation.

In the case of the Motorola MTA, the problem would be less apparent if the line levels were not so high. For example, if I compare the volume of the dial tone, it appears to be up about 6db over the one provided by the telephone company. I can tell by listening that the AGC in my phone and/or headset is working overtime, trying to keep the peak levels at a manageable volume. This means that the dynamic range is compressed. The noise floor is closer to the level of the conversation than it should be, so the little white noise bursts are also relatively louder than they should be.

Is there a way to tweak the levels?

Moto,

I have cycled the power many times!

I do have a router, and I have tried the MTA on both sides of the router. I would like to install it before the router, in order to take advantage to the voice priority feature, but unfortunately, the MTA is not UPnP capable. The lack of UPnP causes certain things (like IM file transfers) to work rather badly, or not at all, so I currently have the MTA after the router.

To be honest, the position of the MTA does not seem to have much affect on the general sound quality, but most of my comments are based upon conversations that I have had with the MTA in the Vonage-recommended position, before the router.

Well, I don't even want to get into why Vonage would reccomend a configuration that does not work. In any case, the position does not seem to affect voice quality, at least, not unless it runs out of bandwidth.
