Do I have to port my home phone number when I sign up , or can I try Vonage for a month or two and then have them port my number later ? Can I do this from the "dashboard" ? Any Charges ? Thanks !

You can certainly let them assign you a number and try it for a while. That's what I did. Then you can go to the website and change your number. There is a fee ($9.99) to change your number. You might be able to go through customer support and get it waived, but I am not sure it is worth the hassle.

It would be nice if you have call forwarding with your current carrier. That way you could take advantage of all the Vonage features, i.e. Voice Mail e-mail alerts and call activity reports to name just a couple. You can certainly take advantage of free long distance right away no matter which way you choose to go!

Yes, you can sign up for Vonage then have your number ported as a "virtual number" later on, which costs $10 to set up and $5 a month. Then, if you want, you can have your "virtual number" switched over to your main number and kill off the original number Vonage assigned to you to save the $5 a month.

It should, in theory, only cost you $10 extra (the setup fee on the virtual number) plus maybe $5/month for a month or two of maintaining both numbers.
