Do I have to port my home phone number when I sign up , or can I try Vonage for a month or two and then have them port my number later ? Can I do this from the "dashboard" ? Any Charges ? Thanks ! |

You can certainly let them assign you a number and try it for a while. That's what I did. Then you can go to the website and change your number. There is a fee ($9.99) to change your number. You might be able to go through customer support and get it waived, but I am not sure it is worth the hassle. |

It would be nice if you have call forwarding with your current carrier. That way you could take advantage of all the Vonage features, i.e. Voice Mail e-mail alerts and call activity reports to name just a couple. You can certainly take advantage of free long distance right away no matter which way you choose to go! |

Yes, you can sign up for Vonage then have your number ported as a "virtual number" later on, which costs $10 to set up and $5 a month. Then, if you want, you can have your "virtual number" switched over to your main number and kill off the original number Vonage assigned to you to save the $5 a month.
It should, in theory, only cost you $10 extra (the setup fee on the virtual number) plus maybe $5/month for a month or two of maintaining both numbers. |
