Understood. I couldn't help but think that you had been lead down the wrong path somewhere along the way.

I know you didn't get the answer you were initially looking for. But, maybe we helped in some way, anyway?

Well, I know why our users pay more and a little more about Vonage too. And it sounds like I may be able to view Voip traffic seperatly from IP traffic, which ultimatly could be the solutions I'm looking for.

And yes, it was an interesting morning.

Well its not hard to do. and most all admins know how to do it.

But before I give you a point in the right path please tell me what tele co you are with. I dont wish to give any info to anyone that can be used by "script kiddies"

Maybe e-mail me your office number so i may call you to make sure you are who you say.

I wonder if he works for a _ trying to figure how to tap into our market without the need of a phone number. Forget I said it.

Since we pointed out the issues, and you've now apparently confirmed internally that it has nothing to do with Vonage, its just that your company is going to charge more for "naked" DSL without a local POTS line attached, may I ask just WHY you're still saying that detecting, viewing and monitoring Voip traffic is still "ultimately the solution you're looking for"??? Whether or not your customers are running Voip or not, shouldn't really be of concern to you, and the FCC will not ALLOW you to charge more to customers who are doing so, so why are you still so focused on trying to discover and monitor who's using it?

I had the same question... Honestly, I'm still skeptical. Sorry, kriswd40. I don't mean to be insulting, but things just aren't adding up.

I almost feel like I'm talking to one of those toner guys that calls up and asks for the model and serial number of your office copier and then suddenly a big shipment of toner shows up along with a bill. Or even a long distance guy that wants to "change my billing" and ends up switching my long distance service to another company.

Knowing what you know now, there should be no reason to persue monitoring Voip traffic, unless you have other reasons that you're not disclosing here.

Beats the hell out of me. I'm sure my boss had to know this info already, but he asked me if there was a way to find out if any of these users without POTS were using Vonage.

When the boss asks for something, you pretty much have to do it even if it doesn't make sense.

Chances are, he probably just wants to guage what sort of competition we have at this point. Or he is unaware that having Vonage or not doesn't make a differance in their monthly charges.

Tell him "it's impossible. Can't be done with current technology. Vonage runs under a special 'stealth' IP packet that can't be detected."

LOL.

Very Happy

Seriously, if you really want the answer to this, find someone savvy with firewalls and packet analyzers. It's just not that difficult.

I don't think I could say that with a straight face, though it would be fun to try.

I can probably turn some debugging on in our firewall or one of our routers and get this info, if I'm willing to sit and watch traffic for a while. FUN!

You're beginning to understand why I said it doesn't scale.
