I have been having trouble with my internet connectivity with my Vonage box connected as instructed by the installation guide. My internet browser tells me that the server is not found BUT the Vonage phone never fails to work. We have had the provider, Time Warner Cable, out many times but they never can find a problem. Most of the time the internet will work fine but then for no reason it will crash. If I connect the Vonage box behind my Netgear wireless router the internet will work OK but the phone has problems. Should I consider a router/Vonage box replacement? |

You may try disabling the firewall on the wireless router. |

This is probably caused by the weak DNS proxy, if your Vonage device is an RTP300 or WRTP54G.
Try going to the main setup page and turning off DNS Proxy, and rebooting your computer (or typing IPCONFIG /RENEW at a command line).
If that doesn't work, try this...

This is probably also true of many of the other Vonage routers, though I only have the WRTP54G and I can't confirm it with other routers. |

The test to see if you have a DNS problem or an actual connectivity problem is to go to http://216.115.22.200 if Vonage.com comes up, even though you have no internet connection, then you have a DNS problem. Usually this is solved by turning off the DNS proxy on the main setup page of the RTP300 or WRTP54G, and if needed taking the DNS server IP addresses from the status pages, and manually entering them as your DNS servers on your PC. As far as the other devices, I'm pretty sure these are the only 2 with a DNS proxy, the others I think assign whatever DNS they were assigned to the PC as part of the DHCP setup, although I could be wrong about that part.
Also, if you have the older linksys, the RT31P2 (the blue linksys with green lights), the voice QOS is set by default on some of them at 512k and on others at 256k, depending on your provider, this is sometimes more upstream bandwidth than is available, and shuts down the internet connection if you are on the phone.
Also, on a personal note NateHoy, how is it that you signed up a month before I did, and in that time have had time to post 1005 different messages to this forum? |
