PostPosted: Sun Feb 19, 2006 1:36 am    Post subject: Xfer router policy, and configuring multiple Linksys routers Reply with quote Back to top

I have been a Vonage customer since 2004 using a Linksys RT31P2. I wanted to add wireless capabilities to my home network. I bought a Linksys WRT54GP2 over eBay.

After swapping routers, the internet connection with the WRT54GP2 wireless router worked fine, but my phone service was not working. When I called Vonage, I was told that the Mac ID was registered in the Vonage database to the previous owner, and they would not allow another user (me) to use the router.

Business Question on Vonage policy: Is it true that Vonage does not allow routers to be transferred? Seeing that Vonage main business is selling phone service and increasing subscribership, I would think Vonage would be thrilled to keep customers regardless of the router.

Technical Question:
As a fallback to this business policy, I was looking for guidance to configure use of both Linksys Routers. I have not been able to apply suggestions in threads in this forum about configurations for multiple routers for the following two reasons: 1) my Cable ISP does not allow static IP to be used, and 2) both my routers are Linksys and therefore, there is only a single web address to change configuration for both routers.

I was hoping to use the Linksys RT31P2 as the phone adapter and somehow utilize the Linksys WRT54GP2 wireless capabilities.

Yes.

2) both my routers are Linksys and therefore, there is only a single web address to change configuration for both routers.

Hook up one at a time and configure. Configure whichever device you want behind the primary device to have another IP address, and you should be able to access both.

As for config, I would have just bought a WRT-54GL instead of a Vonage device, but I know why you did, to have everything on one device. Personally, I hate that approach, kind of like having a VCR and DVD player in one. If one breaks, you're screwed on both. My recommendation is to use the WRT as your gateway device, connect all your PC's through it, wireless or wired, then connect the RTP as your phone adapter. I'm not sure what the 54G is going to try to do, in terms of trying to reach out to Vonage. That may introduce new issues that not many here have seen. Ebay adapters are never a good buy, for this reason.

Thanks!! Following your technical solution I got connection (internet and voice) using the Wireless Linksys as the primary router, and using the Vonage Linksys as the secondary router. I had been unsuccessful trying the Vonage router as my primary, so I could easily disconnect the Wireless as a security precaution when not using the wireless. Any idea why reversing the order of the routers made my internet connection not work?

Related to Vonage's Business Policy:
I understand what Vonage is doing, but I don't understand why, or what are they are trying to discourage. I would think the more people paying for monthly service, the bigger Vonage's IPO.

Is the database of router MAC IDs, local to Vonage only or Global? In otherwords, hypothetically, if I went to another Voip provider, would they see this MAC ID as already used.

Thanks again!

The jury is out to whether you can fully unlock a Vonage device, some say yes, some say no, but I suppose if it could be completely unlocked, yes it would work. The issue however is firmware updates. Currently Vonage pushes them to devices, adding improvements (and sometimes not so improving) software. Remember, these are Vonage devices. You would be on your own to get these updates, and they aren't as easy to find as other Linksys deivce software. Linksys doesn't, to my knowledge, even put them on their website, since Vonage pushes them to it.
