I'd be real mad if someone was able to hack in and "brick" my routers, i.e., make them unusable by installing new hardware and passwords on them.

Did some searching about bricking the WRTP54G, nothing on there except a few who are trying to install aftermarket firmware and bricked their devices.
I wouldn't be too worried about this kind of thing.
My IP address is...

That's what I meant. If someone WERE to find out my IP, they could install aftermarket firmware on a device, change the passwords, and now it's useless to me. But I digress, your own security is your own problem. Your comfort level is where you want it/need it to be.

I will try it since my adapter is on the inside of my network. I would not recommend that anyone do this if you have this unit as your main router off of your cable/dsl!
it would make more sense in this case to have the
Vonage
router facing the modem, and have secondary firewall(s) (routers, NAT) for the computing gear. That would make the
Vonage
router transparent for voice and have more specific filtering for the computers.

here's a guess as to why turning off these filters worked: the Linksys router is a low cost device, relatively low powered. Like any other router, every protocol or filter that is turned on (including the Voice QoS) adds overhead to the router's workload. Turn things off, it has less work to do. The VPN protocols per se have nothing to do with voice.

Little update here:
despite my initial Jumping, i was - and am- getting some more clipping, even on low bandwidth (not to be used)
I called
Vonage
and the rep said that my settings were all strange and he set them back to default, which is working OK now.
Still clips occasionally, but I think what happened is when I reset the device it worked great for a day until it downloaded the new settings from the
Vonage
servers?
generally though i think it's beneficial to have the device as "OPEN" as possible
it's a router, not a firewall....
Do you think a higher amp DC adapter would help?

Only if your objective is to start a fire. The previous poster was, I believe, referring to more processing power (CPU), not amps.

I agree in general, though a router is a firewall of sorts.
Your clipping could be due to your ISP's service. I have Comcast as well, and you have to ealize that past the modem it's a shared resource, sometimes the local network is quite busy (it starts getting very busy here at 4 PM), sometimes the backbone from here to
Vonage
is not performing well. Nothing we can do about that.
