I am looking into using soft phone and went to add it on in my account and saw that not only is it another $9.95/mo on top of my $24.95/mo plan, but also it won't be unlimited minutes. Do I have this right?

* I have the $24.95 "Unlimited Minutes" plan
* Soft phone will cost another $9.95/mo and not include my unlimited minutes, I will only have 500
* I will have a separate # for the soft phone

If this is true, does Vonage have any competition? The only reason I have been using them is because I get a real phone number. Does any other company offer that?

Well, to answer my own question, BroadVoice looks to have a good plan for Soft Phone only users. It is called "BYOD", Bring Your Own Device. It is about $20/month total for unlimited minutes to USA, Canada and a handful of other countries. You can use any soft phone software/phone adapter you desire. I don't think BroadVoice has as polished an interface as Vonage but from reading independent reviews the quality seems to be at least as good as Vonage. This seems to be a great alternative for soft phone only people like myself.

I'm not trying to be down on Vonage, I have been largely happy with my 1.5 years of service... but their soft phone pricing is ridiculous. I will most likely make the switch.

Well if you can wait a bit it seems like Vonage will open up their SIP credentials. That would enable to you to use a softphone for free with your regular service. If all the rumors are true that is....last I heard was around march time this should happend. I think it going along with the IPO thing to make Vonage look better to the competition.

Do you really expect to exceed 8 hours of use a month? Incoming calls don't count,.

So, you're planning to switch without trying the product? I don't see a basis for complaint.

I don't see what trying the product has to do with his complaint which also would be a complaint of my own. Its absolutely ridiculous to have to pay for a softphone account when I should be able to use any available softphone application with my exisiting Vonage account info. Why would I want or need a seperate line just to be able to use the phone thru my PC ? I see no difference between Vonage doing this and the telephone company telling me what kind of phone im allowed to use. The way i see it is I pay to use vonage's service how i choose to connect to that service is really none of vonages buisness as long as I dont compromise thier security. So to sum up the only reason they dont want anyone connecting to their regular account thru a softphone is pure and simple greed.

I have been with Vonage for almost 2 years now and I could not agree more about the bad softphone policy. It is less about the money for me (even $9.99 feels like too much) but the fact that I need a seperate number.

I agree completely!! The article said that Vonage may release their SIP info at the end of the first quarter -- well here we are and no SIP info to run simultanious phones on the same number.

It's a briliant idea -- especially before the upcoming IPO -- so Vonage.... we're waiting............. Smile

You can download the softphone software from sjphone or x-ten and use anyone of a dozen or more sites for free pc to pc calling. If you want a PSTN number for people to call you from landlines and cell phones you can get a number for $5 or less a month. Project Gizmo and Sipphone provide numbers for $35 per year, and you can pick the number you want. You can also get free call in numbers at some of these sites, but the number is from a specific area (e.g. IPkall is Washington, Gizmo is Nevada, and Stanaphone is New York City). You can make outgoing calls to the PSTN for 1 to 2 cents a minute with most of these companies. Gizmo is 1 cents and stanaphone is 1.6 cents. Stanaphone has a preconfigure SJ phone that you can download, and Gizmo has its own software phone. Gizmo does work on a SJ and x-ten as well if you configure it yourself.

Why can't you use the same Vonage # on a SoftPhone?
If you can activate two devices with the same #, then you should be able to activate a softphone with the same # !!

I have to agree - the basic point is that the same line/minutes/plan should work for both the 'regular' house phone and a softphone on your laptop.

We have that at work and the convenience is just amazing.

I can be in China on business and have exactly the same number etc. everywhere. Call forwarding etc. doesnt make sense - since the caller gets that extra delay before forwarding to your laptop phone #.
You could use the SimulRing feature - but that is a strange way to do this. I haven't tried it so don't know how it works. And that requires one to purchase a second line.

One shouldn't have to get 2 # when the individual is only 1.

1 person = 1 phone number.
