Post subject: Linksys WRT54G -- settings?
Hello All. Got
Vonage
yesterday, Feb 12th. I have Charter.net for an ISP. I've had my Linksys WRT54G for about 18 months and I/m very happy with it. Bought Vtech IP 8100-2, the unit that comes with two cordless phones. Plugged the Vtech into the router (followed the instructions EXACTLY), no luck getting the unit to work. Spent about 50 minutes with tech help, no luck. Tried running internet signal from wall, through Vtech then to PC, avoiding router all together, no luck. The modem is a Motorola SURFboard modem and works great. Some people at work told me I need to change the router settings to DHCP, but I'm not sure where to start to do that. I'm fairly computer savvy and set up my home network myself.....but hooking up
Vonage
is giving me a fit. Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Hey, nice name!
The DHCP setting for the router are on the first "setup" page when you enter your password. Should say DHCP enable or something like that, and ask how many clients. Set it to 4. Another thing you can try, is maybe the MAC address of the IP 8100 isn't registered with
Vonage
?

Thanks for the reply. (I retired as a MM1 in Sep 05).
I had heard about changing setting to DHCP...for the life of me I don't know how to get to the router page to change that. IP8100 is registered with
Vonage
. I have that all set up as far as I know. The tech guy asked for the MAC number so I am guessing that he checked that.

Hey NavyDavy. I found/figured out how to change the router settings. I'll reboot the pc and try plugging in the Vtech device again. Thanks for your help.

Two observations - first, since you tried hooking the Vtech directly to the cable modem and bypassed the router completely, of course your primary problem isn't related to the router. My guess is - when you set up your service initially with Charter, your MAC address was registered with them - likely the MAC address of your computer, but possibly the MAC address of your router. Have you cloned the computer's MAC address in the router? Anyway, if you want to try to get it working with the router DISconnected, I'd try cloning both the computer's and then the router's MAC addresses in the Vtech and seeing if you can get it to work with either of those.
Or, to get it up and running WITH the router, follow these excellent and detailed instructions from another member here, Nate Hoy. The instructions say they're for a WRT54G with a RTP300 or WRTP54G, but your 18 month old WRT54G is the same thing, and just hook up the Vtech where Nate shows the RTP or WRTP54G. Fortunately, your WRT54G is absolutely the best router out there to front end your
Vonage
and your network, with the addition of the great 3rd party firmware that Nate references. I'm using exactly the same setup, I just didn't do all the work that Nate did to create that excellent guide!
