For work I have to use a laptop to dial in (yes, dial) to a number to transfer data. In the pre-Vonage days I just unplugged the phone line from the phone and into the laptop's 56k modem, dialed in, transfered, everything was fine. Now, however, with Vonage, I cannot do that. The modem just keeps going with it's old school modem sounds and then gives up and never connects.
Tonight we upgraded from 384/128 to 3000/256. I can tell a huge difference in internet and download speeds, but haven't tested call quality yet. [bold] I still cannot dial in from the laptop to that local number though to load my data! [/bold] I thought that maybe the increase in bandwidth would help it out, but it doesn't seem to. I enabled QoS in the router for the phone service, and set it to 200kbps upstream.
I know it is possible to dial in using Vonage and these laptops, I have coworkers that can do the transfers without problems. Vonage isn't letting me dial out from a laptop to a local number... why?
Any suggestions? Thank you very much.
EDIT: is it important to have the upstream for Vonage at 90kbps? I think it was changed using Vonage's service/quality online utility to a low value because of the previous low bandwidth setup. With my current bandwidth, what settings should I look for to have it at? |

Any ideas as to why I can't use dial-up through Vonage? |

have you...
1. set bandwith to high (can also be be done per call basis by *99) 2. disabled callwaiting (can't remember the *## right now) 3. slow your modem down to 9600 baud max...
look at the tivo/alarms/fax forum here for more tips...
since they all use a modem to connect... some use a dsl filter installed backwards too |
