PostPosted: Sat Feb 11, 2006 11:04 pm    Post subject: 2 adapters- one phone number Reply with quote Back to top

My wife and I have a small internet/local business. We have an office we use during the day but we continue to work at home in the evenings fulfilling travel quote requests and contacting clients. I know that I can just unplug and move the adapter from one location to the other but I would prefer to use two adapters, one at each location plugged in all the time. Only one would actually be in use at any given time. Customer service was a bit vague about whether or not I could do this. Has anyone ever done this and if so, how do I go about activating the second adapter.

I don't think you can do that, but I have a suggestion. Why not get a softphone number. See if you like this:

1. Keep the adapter at work. Unplug when you leave at night, because you forward the calls received to your softphone number via call forwarding.

2. Set up a softphone on a PC at home, and you should receive calls from the office, and your clients will only have to call the number their used to.

3. Go to work the next day, plug in the adapter, and it will ring, because it's the primary number and it's available, thus no forwarding.

Not sure how much outgoing you do; some of the softphone accounts are limited to a number of minutes per month.

Currently, this isn't supported...You could get 2 Vonage lines (with separate adapters) and use Simulring to get the number to appear at the second location, but there's no other current way to pull it off. That said, there was a post in here about a week ago which mentioned that Vonage was possibly giving the credentials out to users, which would allow you to run multiple adapters on one Vonage line.

Thanks for the responses. The two line scenario makes sense to me. Much cheaper than the $700.00 per month we've been paying to Ma Bell. I REALLY like that SimulRing feature.

You would also buy some two line phones, and then wire each adapter into a different line. If you would like more info on this you can email me at dorgan@optonline.net I would be more than willing to walk you through it

Actually...just came across another possible option...

Aastra (fmrly Nortel) has a small IP-based PBX system which might do the trick:

http://www.aastra.com/downloads/VentureIP_Product_Brief.pdf
http://www.aastra.com/downloads/VentureIPsys_DS_E.pdf

If you had enough bandwith at one of the locations to run ~2x the Voip connections that you'd be using, this might actually work for you. You'd have to do a VPN between the two sites, but once that's established, you could use the VPN to let the IP phones see the POTS gateway at the one site. As an added bonus, both sites would be intercom extension #'s of each other, freeing up the POTS/Vonage lines for other things. I've not used it yet, but the price is making it look very attractive to replace my aging (but still ticking) Nortel Meridian 6x16.

The cheapest place I've found the Aastra stuff so far is Provantage:
http://www.provantage.com/aastra-telecom-technologies~110AAST.htm

$260 for the IP phones, $160 for the gateway. Cheap multi-site capable PBX.

Can one use a second adapter for their fax line, for example? My fax machine is located two rooms away, and I'd love to hook up a second adapter in that room and connect the fax machine to it. There's currently no way for me to hook it up to the phone 2 port in my current adapter, since that's in a different room.

I just got an answer back via email from Vonage technical support. The answer is no, you can't do that. The best option, I think, is a second line with it's own adapter. It's easy enough to have the second line ring when a call comes in on line one.

But I have a second line and number. I have a main number and a second line and number that is a dedicated fax line. I surmise that would work in my aforementioned example.

I'm not so sure. I don't know much about how Vonage works but I believe that they tie a particular phone number to the MAC address of your adapter. In the case of the fax line, both the primary line and the dedicated fax line would point to the MAC address of your adapter. Another adapter would have a different MAC address and the Vonage system would not associate that adapter's MAC address with your fax line phone number.
