The town I live in had to estimate my water bill this month because my meter never dialed them. I called them and they were able to get it to work when they tested it, but I would like to know if this is a common problem. I have a linksys WRTP54G wireless Router / Modem. I checked the polarity of the meter jack and it's good. No problems with voice quality.
BTW...I am REQUIRED to have a phone line that works with the water meter....as odd as it may seem, my town actually has an ordinance. |

You might want to try reversing the polarity on the jack that feeds the meter. Quite often people who install those type of meters are plumbers and not electronic types and could care less about polarity, often reversing wires. |

it would be interesting to know who many times the meter retries if the connection fails. maybe the water department could add the *99 and *(whatever it is to defeat callwaiting) i also dial all my numbers 1-XXX-XXX-XXXX even locals maybe changing the dial set-up... but its there water meter - unlike tivo or a fax where you can play with the settings - its probably locked down and unavailable to the user to customize the dialing etc also try the dsl filter backward |

I don't think it actually 'dials' a number....when I called the water department, the lady was 'kind' enough to send a tone right in to my ear while I had the phone connected to it (around 1200hz if my hearing is on ). Then she said to hang up. A minute later she called back and said my phone and meter worked fine during the test, but I never saw it on my outgoing call log. I'm guessing they have something connected at the CO that receives a signal, but I'm not sure.
The polarity thing might be possible, but I checked the jack polarity and it's fine....unfortunately the meter is sealed with a wire tag..... |
