Other than opening your PAP2 to attacks on ports other than the expected ones, probably not. I'm just anal about keeping my LAN secure.

I like to keep my LAN as secure as I can as well. With equipment I understand and can configure in the past that has been easy. I am new to the whole Voip thing and don't fully understand/like how locked down their hardware is.

I know having anything in A DMZ is a potential threat because 1) it is behind your router and 2) it is unprotected. A computer or other device with all their vulnerabilities I can understand the DMZ being a bad idea. How vulnerable is a PAP2 to an attack. What type ports could be exploited.

My plan is to turn off the DMZ tonight and see if the PAP2 still works. If it doesn't I am going to try the port forwarding.

Hopefully none and I can't say with confidence either way. What I do know is that it is a router's job to deal with external threats by blocking access by design while that is not the phone adapters primary role.

That is how I have my setup with the DMZ disabled. But remember the routers firewall is still on and if you use WEP encryptions you shouldn't have to worry about hacks or attacks .My PAP2 has perfect voice quality and no problems what so ever compared to the RT31P2 I used initially.

OK, I disabled the DMZ rebooted everything and it still works, no port forwarding no special permissions. Smile

I'm using PAP2 behind a WRT54G (V3.1). The first week of service was the honeymoon I suppose. No port forwarding, no DMZ, and everything was perfect. The call quality easily matched my traditional line. Then my service went out. I went to Vonage's web site and there was announcement about them having problems with a carrier and that they were working on it. No big deal. Well I still couldn't make calls the next day, so I figured I better get to the bottom of it.

In the end port forwarding or the DMZ fix the issue for me. Maybe sometime when my wife isn't home I'll try the original setup again and see if it works.
