Any one known a good phone setup that works with vonage? I'd like to go with a wireless setup with a single base station and a couple satellite phones. I'd also like if the phones were able to notify me when I have a voicemail .. via the light on top of the phone antenna if one is present. Any feedback is appreciated.
Thanks. |

is there any need to have an on-board answering machine? Vonage doesn't store any messages on your local answering machine, right? |

Your right...there is not need for an answering machine since vonage has voicemail. So thats why I choose the uniden tru8865....cause it doesn't have a built in answering machine.
I know there was another thread about the TRU8860 model going around as well. From that thread I learned that the models with the answering machine don't light up when you have VM on vonage...only when you have messages on the machine...so avoid the ones with answering machines.
I personally love the phone. It's got lots of cool features I'm learning to love. The room monitor feature is becoming my new favorite option. When I work from home I'm upstairs. But I like to make breakfast of bagels or toast. I have a phone in the kithcen so I set my phone upstairs to monitor the kitchen phone so I can hear when my bagel/toast is ready. Truelly geeky I know...but it's great.
Range wise I've walked quite a bit away from my house and was still able to get a dial tone. |

Sorry, that only classifies as "kinda geeky", or "resourceful". In order to earn the term "somewhat geeky", you could need to get a wireless web cam and watch the toaster to see when it pops up.
To qualify as "truly geeky", you'd need to hack Linux onto your toaster and put a wireless network card in the toaser so it sends an 802.11 signal to a custom application on your desktop to inform you when the toaster has popped, the number of watts consumed during the toastage, average efficiency of the toaster elements, and ambient temperature.
Points deducted if you don't compile your own kernel. |

Just out of curiosity, do any corded phones work with Vonage? In addition to my cordless setup, I have one corded phone that has this great answering system integrated with it--personalized voice greetings, a dozen mailboxes, etc. It's a digital system, meaning it's tapeless and all.
Can something like this operate with Vonage? |

If you are design concious, I recommend the Beocom 1 from Bang & Olufsen. They are expensive, though. A two handset Beocom 1 runs a $1000, but the vast majority of cordless phones in this country are cheap looking plastic bricks. It boggles my mind. The Beocom doesn't light up if you have a VM, although it flashes if you missed a call. I personally barley check my VM through the phone. I use the .wav file email attachment feature. Other than that, it's an awesome phone technology-wise and the audio quality is unmatched. I mean you have to hear it to believe it. I've never heard clearer sounding calls.

* spews hot chocolate everywhere
If anyone on this forum had a grand to blow on one telephone do you think they would be using Vonage? No, they would have their accountants worry about the phone bills and devote their time to more leisurely pursuits such as installing wine cellars, yachting and jaunting to Monaco to dine with royalty.

Well put. I'd love to have a linux based toaster. Maybe I could figure out how to get it to do the dishes as well. Then again, if I had a linux based toaster my wife and daughter might complain its complex for them to use it. |

Corded phones work great. as for the answering machine you could either turn off vm or you could leave vm on and just set it longer then your answering machine. This way you can have people leave msg's when your on the phone and don't feel like answering or if the service is out. |
