I think so. It's a step-by-step for getting the latest aftermarket firmware on a WRT54GL and getting everything up and running.

Don't get me wrong, there are cheaper and probably very good routers out there. But after my Vonage WRTP54G experience, my days of buying closed-source routers are over. I'll build my own router from an old computer and M0n0wall if I have to rather than going back to closed-source units.

The WRT54GL ain't cheap, and is honestly probably a bit overpriced for the hardware. $50 would be a good price point. But it's a solid foundation that a number of people have built some good stuff for. Once you add aftermarket firmware, it has features you probably won't see anywhere else in the under-$100 markets.

Yeah well rather than buying and returning routers, I'll take a route known to fix my problems. Just so long as I don't have to spend the weekend learning Linux for beginners. I'm assuming I can do all this by carefully following instructions. Thanks for your help. Once I try and hopefully succeed I'm going to post this thread link on a few other forums where people are having trouble.

I'm not clear about something. Do I use the setup CD that comes with the router or just jump straight into your instructions? guess i'll just plug it in as you instruct.

Aw I'm so bummed out, I spent 75 bucks and hours on this today, so many hours. No phone light on the Vonage router, won't show up in the GL's device list, won't respond to attempts to reach it at .120. Sad

Possible discrepencies:
Hard reset and configuring the Vonage router again didn't improve the results.
Some options on my rt31p2 are different than what you outline in your instructions.
I can access the Vonage router with my PC and I get into at 192.168.15.1 but I can't access it at 192.168.1.120 via another computer hooked up to the new GL router.
The GL connects to the internet no problem.
I was uncertain which MAC address to use. The "status" page of the Vonage router gives an address ending in D, the bottom of the unit also lists that as the WAN address and gives a different for the LAN address ending in C.

I have a static IP DSL, I think you have something different.
Your directions on "upstream bandwith" say the result should be mbps but i'm pretty sure it's in kbps, but anyway i got a reading of 574 (my total upload speed is supposed to be 768up 8.0 down). That test page merely lists up and down, it makes no mention of "upstream bandwidth" so I assumed I was supposed to use up.

I hope I don't have to spend days trying to get this to work, but I appreciate you trying to help.

I saw your post on hypwerwrt.org (I presume it was yours) and replied there. But a couple of points:

1. If your RT31P2 is "used" to the DSL connection, be sure to retrain it to be a client to the WRT54GS, by setting it up to obtain an IP address automatically.

2. The upstream bandwidth is for QoS, and yes, that's the right number to use. "Upload" / "Upstream" / "Up". Anything that means "rom your computer to the Internet". Smile

For your previous question - either way you want to go. The setup CD will set your basic network up. If you can surf the net already, you're past that point.
