PostPosted: Thu Feb 09, 2006 12:59 am    Post subject: Does your Vonage Forum newsletter show up in HTML? Reply with quote Back to top

I read my email on the web with SquirrelMail and for reasons no one can figure out the newsletter from this site does not display in HTML. I got my own small website a while back so I can have a permanent email address, and this is what the server (ace-host.net) people provide.

I get many emails in HTML from places like CNET and Schawb that do display in HTML so I know that I have my options in SquirrelMail correctly setup. I forwarded a copy of the newsletter to my Yahoo account. It showed up as an attachment and it did display correctly there. There are a few other emails, like the statements from my bank, that also do not display in HTML, so it is not just this newletter.

Any thoughts or suggestions I can forward on to the server IT guys?

Hi Jim:

First let me say that I truly enjoy feedback such as this.

I would be more than happy to email you the raw code (blank template) that is used to produce the newsletter.

I would venture to guess that the issue is with us (and also with your bank) but SquirrelMail would most likely be better at finding the problem.

Would you like me to email that to you (I have your email address) as an attachment?

Dan,
Hi, yes if you could send the template that would be great. I have no clue if my server people will even look at it, or If anyone at SquirrelMail.net will. SquirrelMail is an Opensource freebie mail tool so its not nearly as refined as the big boys. Also being opensource I'm not even who or where to send it... but I'll try.

The odd thing is that most HTML emails do come through. Something about this one... maybe the header, or the first line format... who knows.

Glad you appreciate the feedback. I wonder if I'm the only one having this problem, or the only one to ask.

Thanks
Jim M.

Here is a follow up. I do not fully understand it as I'm not an HTML guru. I got this from the forumn Archive over at SquirrelMail/SorcueForge. Let me just say this.. those guys overthere really really hate HTML emails. Anyway, I'm not sure if this will help on your end.

Thanks

If you are insistent in doing HTML only emails however, be sure you"re
including the Content-Type header too. If you don"t have a Content-Type,
some IMAP servers (UW-IMAP notably) will treat it as plain text.

Ok, perhaps this is it... there needs to be a "mime-type" included in the header. I'll post the response to a similar problem from the SquirellMail guys. I check youe header, and my banks header... neither had the "mime type" listed.

Thanks

Find programmer that wrote your php mailer and show him rfc2045.

Chapter 4.
---
Messages composed in accordance with this document MUST include such
a header field, with the following verbatim text:

MIME-Version: 1.0
---

SquirrelMail gets message structure from IMAP server. IMAP server fails to
parse message that violates rfc.

Hey, not to be pushy or anything, but have you had a chance to see how the headers on the newsletter are generated? I don't know if you have any control over them. My Bank said their ISP claimed its "not their problem" even though it most likely is.

I realize that this site is most likely a side interest/hobby for you so please don't read into my question. I greatly appreciate the fact that site even exist and all the effort you've done to date.

Thanks
JM

Wow, that was quick. Take your time.... this is far from a life or death issue. Heck, if I can figure out how to get Thunderbird to work from my office it may not even be an issue.

Well, I guess since I'm still getting your newsletters in garbled text, that changing the header is not easy. My bank also has the same problem and they said they would "look into it". Who would have thought that adding 1 line to a header is that tough..... Damn SW!
