I had a few guys on here help me a few days ago configuring my RTP300 after it stopped working properly. It seems that it has done it again and again.
Whenever I turn off my computer, I can no longer access the internet when I turn it back on. My phone works but any internet stuff can not be reached even though it is obvious that there is some sort of connectivity. In order to get my RTP300 to work properly, I must turn off everything and unplug everything and then plug up my modem first...wait 3 minutes.....plug in my router...wait 3 minutes...and then turn on my computer. I'm not sure if it stops working when my dynamic IP changes or what? Anybody ever heard of this? Any ideas? Any prayers?

If the phone's working, there's a good chance that the router probably isn't the issue (it's possible, but not as likely). What operating system are you running on your computer? It sounds like it's not renewing its IP correctly.

You don't use P2P (Limewire, BitTorrent, eMule, anything like that) by any chance, do you?

Hi ,

I have the same problem, I notice my tcp/ip conenctions dropping all the time, ssh etc. but mainly when I have a p2p application running. Is this a UPnP Problem with the firmware of this router? I don't think I've had this problem before until this fw upgrade to .60

the RTP300 and WRTP54G have known issues with P2P. They take WAY too long to "idle out" connections that have not been terminated properly (they keep them in the active connections table for 5 days after the last communication). Entries cannot be deleted from the table until they are idle. Entries are not idle for 5 days. When the table (which holds about 2,000 entries) is full, no more connections are allowed until entries are deleted (existing entries can still be used). See a problem here? Wink

The fast way to clear the table is to restart the router (pull power and plug it back in). For two months, running downstairs 3 times a day and power cycling the Vonage router was called the "Vonage Shuffle" in my household, and the WAF* dropped like a stone.

(*WAF = Wife Acceptance Factor).

I came close to wiring up an extension cord upstairs so I could unplug the router from the living room, but big, ugly orange extension cords running through heater vents do NOT improve the WAF.

When I finally figured out what the hell was happening, and that there was NOTHING I could do to the Vonage router to fix it, I put a WRT54G V4 (now known as the WRT54GL, available by mail order only) in front of my WRTP54G back in October for that same reason, and the fact that QoS does not work properly for me in the WRTP54G either. Since then, Life Has Been Good, and my Vonage improved considerably too.

http://vonage.nmhoy.net/wrt54gl.html

The Vonage router needs two minor corrections to work. Unfortunately, those two corrections are not possible with the built-in firmware, and the devices are locked.

Gnash your teeth for a while, like I did, feel free to vent a little anger (just take it easy, too bad language will get Dan upset), then decide if you want to fix it. Fixing it involves the purchase of a better router. Gnashing your teeth is free, except for the dental work, but won't fix your network. Wink
