just talked to tech support, he stated "Every Samsung fax model requires an analog phone port to sense incoming calls."
Will try to exchange it for another brand, any suggestions for a good multi-function (stand alone fax, >20 ppm BW laser print, scan) that works well through Vonage service??
thx |

Who did you talk to? Vonage or Samsung.
I'm almost certain it was Samsung.
Fax's require an analog phone port. That's not exactly news. |

I talked to both on many occasions, however it was Samsung's statement I quoted in my post. |

I'm not sure what that would matter with Vonage. The phone ports in the back of the telephone adapters act no differently than any other telephone company's service (voltage, control signals.) That seems very odd that they would not work at all. |

This one will prove to be interesting. Two companies and neither one will think it's their issue.
Anything that plugs into Vonage adapters have to be analog.
To me it seems that for a Samsung rep to say what he said, then he doesn't understand Voip and the Vonage service.
The information in this thread seems incomplete. What things have been tried, etc... What model?
Or has it already been exchanged |

Bingo Outerfire.
Neither company can help and, as mentioned, I talked to both several times.
The model I have is the SAX-4720F, Samsung SCX-4720f multi function with stand alone fax. When a call is made to the second port going into the fax line, it rings until VM picks it up. It's like the fax doesn't even know the line is ringing.
I double (no, triple) checked all settings, cables, etc. and tried various menu options on the fax. ECM (on/off), distinctive ring pattern detection (on/off), set it to pick up on two rings. There is no setting published for baud rate, but the fax is 33.6Kbps.
Outbound faxes work great. Just cannot sense an inbound ring. |

You've plugged a telephone into that second port and verified that it's fully functional? You can make and receive calls and the telephone rings when the fax line is called? |

yes, yes, and yes. I switched the phone and fax to each port on the router and tried again, phone works fine on both ports, inbound fax line rings on both both ports, I can use the handset on the Samsung to place and receive calls.
I can fax outbound with no problem. That takes line problems out of the troubleshooting.
When the fax line rings, I can also do a "manual" receive by hitting "on hook dial", and then "start".
But the fax machine will simply not auto answer when the line rings .
BTW, it worked fine with my old provider, changing from land based to Voip is the only change I made.

Really weird. The same voltage that causes your phone to ring is what should trigger the fax. Vonage does have some control over the ring voltage. If you haven't already, you might ask them to bump it to maximum on the fax line. If your phone is not a simple analog one with a plain bell type ringer, you should try to get one and see how it sounds when plugged into the fax line.
I hesitate to mention it, but I assume that you've carefully checked your fax software and made sure that autoanswer is enabled. |
