For now, the best & easiest way to get SIP access to the Vonage network. There are some unresolved issues with using the main # SIP credentials with other devices. Word from Vonage as of today is that there isn't any current plan to open up the credentials on residential plans. They do have some business plans where they do allow you to bring your own device, but they're all metered plans. We shall see.

For those curious to experiment, beware...the Vonage logs do show which device(s) you're using with their service. While I don't know if they're actively scanning for unauthorized devices, they clearly have the capability of it.

TPA,
First off congrats on your MVM status. Welcome to the club! Wink

I wonder if Vonage knows of the device per se or see's two ID's with the same SIP credentials and then decides to look a bit deeper into the issue.

Not that I have tried yet Wink

Actually, the Vonage network will only recognize one device at a time... So, if you have your Vonage adapter connected and then connected an IP-phone/Asterisk/etc, the system sees the new registration/logon and moves the service over to that device. Then sometime later, the Vonage adapter will poll the Vonage servers to let them know it's still connected to the 'net and that will be seen as a registration and the Vonage service will go to that device...and back & forth. Pretty annoying to say the least.

As far as knowing the devices, Vonage's logs clearly show what's attached. Still unclear is if they're actively looking for abuse, but there is no doubt that they can see it if they want to.

Does this mean that you would be able to call a Vonage number for free from a SIP service like iptel or FWD?

I do believe you can call your Vonage device directly (been awhile since I've tried) via SIP. The number was 1xxxxxxxxxx@<yourIP>. The xxx's are your Vonage #, area code & phone number. It's been awhile since I've played with it 'though.

Would you happen to recall the detals? I've been trying to get this to work without success. sip:<vonage number>@<ip>:5061 should work. But all I get is "request timeout."

I have a Motorola VT1005 connected directly to a DSL modem.

Isn't Vonage somewhat of a closed network? Meaning that SPIT (VOIP spam) wouldn't work and that you can't call via IP?

Vonage originally said end of 1st quarter -- which is coming up... Anyone hear any news about the SIP info?

I have SJFONE installed on my PPC and they have the Vonage setup already on there for Vonage softphone -- can't wait until they get rid of the paid softphone and let us on using our laptops or PPCs.

I am excited to hear about Vonage supposedly releasing the SIP credentials so i can use my ph# on a pbx software system. I wonder if this is true for Vonage Canada?

I await (im)patiently for this news!!

I really want this since I have a sipura/linksys spa1001 that I have a freedigits line on as a backup for my Vonage line. One thing about this is that you can have 2 lines going into 1 phone with distinctive ring. The two lines can be with different providers. I would love to toss my RT31P2 out and use my sipura device alone which is the size of a deck of cards.

I must say Vonage will bend over backwards to keep your business. I can't complain about that.
