I think Broadvoice's method/solution is the best answer to the abuse problem. I wonder if it'd allow me to run multiple adapters rather than having to carry my one single adapter everywhere I go.
Wow, I really hope this would allow two adapters on one line.. i feel like a geek packing and unpacking my adapter every day
I'm looking at the idea of leaving the
Vonage
adapter at my primary residence and carrying a smallish IP phone with me.. then I'm down to 1 device for
Voip
on the road rather than the adapter + telephone.

Isn't there a way they can just limit the amount of simultaneous lines open to prevent abuse?

I think that's what they are planning on when they open the credentials. Multiple simultaneous use would be subject to a per-minute surcharge.

Has anyone heard any updates on this or know where it was originally mentioned? Should I be ordering my Aastra IP phone yet?

I first read about it here from TMC...

Seems legit -- also explains why they're doing it... Good business move...

What is the chance they unlock our devices; like the PAP2 I bought?

I was thinking more about this, and the more I think about it, the more I doubt it.
Vonage
is opening SIP credentials so they can use other people's unlocked hardware. Unlocking the RTP300, PAP, WRTP54G, etc etc means that other people can use their hardware, which invites competition to use their quite excellent hardware that they've practically given away to gain new customers.
Given their low cancelation fee, and the really low cost of their adapters after rebates, I can't imagine why they'd WANT to unlock those devices and open them up to competitors. They are lost leaders out there still waiting for a profit to be made on them.
IF they decide to unlock adapters, I imagine they'd use it as a revenue stream and charge $15-30 per adapter to unlock them.
What I'd love to see them do is unlock them and make the source code available, but given that these devices are really their competitive advantage, I can't see them doing that.

One of the competing Canadian providers lets you call what is effectively a roamer number so that you can make outgoing calls from your
Voip
line when you are away from home. If you use this feature and make a call remotely, anyone who picks up the phone attached to the ATA at home hears "Remote, remote, remote!" and gets no dial tone. Incoming calls give the call-waiting beep to the person using the remote phone. This is a very good solution and prevents all abuse.

Wow, here's the ultimate - can't wait till one of the major cellular carriers in the U.S. adopts this new technology!
Quote:
Nokia Corp. and Motorola Inc., the world's biggest branded handset makers, both unveiled phones at a tradeshow here this week that switch between cellular coverage outdoors and cheap wireless Internet calling inside - all on a single phone number.
The new Nokia 6136 and Motorola A910 handsets introduced at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona can connect to the Internet via WiFi, rather than Bluetooth, to make cut-price calls from the home, office or public hotspot. A handful of similar phones have been announced by smaller manufacturers in recent months.
"Then you walk out of the door and the call is seamlessly handed off to the cellular network," said Nokia Executive Vice President Kai Oistamo. "There are no dropped calls - it's like moving from one cell to another one in a cellular network today."

I agree. Opening SIP has a business case for it. In addition to the points you've made, unlocking the adapters makes them vulnerable to tinkerers, who might then need technical support to get them working again. That might be tolerable if there were a business case for it, but...
