i'm having problems with voice quality here. i have searched around quite a bit. but im still confused a bit.

setup:

Comcast 6 mb's. 45 KB/s up. never goes down. its a perfect Connection in my opinion. which should supposedly hole 2 high quality conversations at once. or more, i forgot.

im using an RTP300 router and i have my fone line plugged into that. and my computer is plugged into it.

i have 4 ports forwarded on it. for P2P. and FTP server. that stuff. and im positive they're all forwarded correctly.

ok. here's the problem whenever im uploading. even if im uploading like 10 KB/s (which is out of 45 KB/s) my voice quality goes down the drain. if i unplug my computer. then it goes straight back up and everything sounds fine.

so i decided to do the QoS thing on the router. and i set the 3 main ports that i use to low priority. but yet nothing has happened. my speed on my computer doesn't change ever. if im on the fone. when im uploading. its still going at a steady 45 KB/s.

does a voice call really need 45 KB/s upload? i didn't think it did. but i do have plenty of download. i can sometimes get 10 meg out of it.

btw. im sorta knowledgeable of my router so i can deal with more advanced options.

is there any other solution than buying an expensive router that has QoS that actually works?

Do you mean 450K up, because 45K up isn't enough to sustain a Voip client and isn't consistent with a broadband connection with 6M down.. Vonage at highest quality setting will only need 90kbs but if you are streaming bit torrent or Slingbox or whatever out to the net, then you may have issues with latency and packet loss through your router even though the bandwidth seems sufficient. Read the sticky regarding "what to post" about your connection if you want help with your question.

o, im sorry.

i ment 45 kilobytes (KB) which is around 360 kilobits (Kb)

because 8 bits go into 1 byte. big diffrence there. i just like bytes because they're smaller and easier to remember.

i didn't know what specific info. you wanted. so i just took a screen shot.

im pretty damn sure i have enough upload right there because the sound quality is really good when my computer is not using bandwidth.

(btw, i've had Vonage for a while now, its just that i've finally decided to do something about this problem)

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
says my connection is running at around 6,000 killobits/s (6 meg.) and around 360 kb/s up. (45 KB/s)

i like the speakeasy test because its the fastest server around for testing i find.

It looks like you have a decent connection, but it is the packet discards that are creating the problem with your outgoing connnection. Have your tried running this same test with a direct connection between your computer and the broadband modem? Try to isolate your router from the equation to see if it is an ISP QoS or a LAN induced issue. A score of 3.8 on the test call should provide a reasonable call - not perfect but not bad. I'm a little surprised at your Boston to You not being a 4.4 with your bandwidth, but again you have packet loss in that call. All in all, it looks like you have an okay connection that has some room to be improved upon regarding packet loss. Do you know if your inside adn outside cables are in good repair - is it an older infrastructure to your house? Sometimes just cleaning up splitters or having a new drop brought in to your house can clean up those issues.

thanks for your responses. i took in the fact that the it was loosing packets. so I thought like a TV the coaxel cable its self might be crapy, especialy when sending 2 diffrent types of information at once (my computer and my fone)

so i decided to go to the store and get a high quality cable. problem seems to be fixed. Cool
