PostPosted: Tue Feb 07, 2006 8:09 pm    Post subject: PAP2 problem: work with a switch or do I need a router? Reply with quote Back to top

Ok so far my Vonage experience has been lousy so I'm looking for help from you guys. I'm on my second PAP2. I have it hooked up to my cable modem directly and the power light flickers with the ethernet light constantly and doesn't work. I've tried hooking it up with a switch in between the cable modem and PAP2 and same thing. So I called Vonage tech support last night and the nice man in India said that I should be able to hook the PAP2 directly in to the wall and get a solid blue light for the power light and if that won't work it's dead go get a new one. So one day later, new PAP2, same problem. Somebody tell me what gives?

1. Will it work with the switch?
2. Is a router REQUIRED?
3. Will it work hooked up to the cable modem directly? (I don't think the cable modem has a router or anything, it's a single port variety. RCA DCM425)
4. Should I just wait longer for it to sync up or update the firmware?

I believe you DO need a router as the cable modem is not capable of dishing out or handling IP addresses on devices behind it.

It will NOT work connected to the cable modem - it is meant to be connected to a router.

It won't sync or provision until you connect it to a router, connect the router to your cable modem, and your PC to the router as well.

Good luck.

I don't believe this is correct. I've read posts here in the forum indicating that people have gotten PAP2s working by plugging them directly into a modem- though obviously that would leave you without internet service. Clearly an IP can be obtained through the modem; that's how a router gets it's IP.

Well another hour of tech support with Vonage and $50 later for a new router and I'm up and running. I did not need a router, the Vonage tech had me go direct from the cable modem and we got it up, but then it's useless because I'm connected directly to the cable modem and I can't use the Internet. So I went back and plugged it into the Router and now I have both Vonage and Internet. I had to go through D-Link tech support too to get the UDP ports opened up on the router, which didn't work the first time around via static IP so that's when I called Vonage and Vonage had me go direct to the cable modem and back to DHCP on the adapter. It's almost like it had to be direct first in order to provision itself then it decided to work with the router. Go figure. Well, this cost me another $50 than I anticipated but I'll recoup it in knowing that SBC won't be ramrodding me $50 a month for a local phone so I'm happy.

That's correct, the modem will provide an IP (that is one of its main functions) and the PAP2 will work, but then you'll have no ports available to do anything else. There is no substitute for a good nat router!

Sure the modem hands out an IP but the PAP2 needs to be set for DHCP then. I have mine statically set so I don't even remember how it comes out of the box.
