Is anyone else having problems with Caller ID? Every call that I make out, has the wrong outbound Caller id info. My friends get 646-775-0202 or 646-519-7491. All of my customers whom I've gotten to sign up for Vonage are calling me and they have the same numbers as well. I emailed tech support who told me that they fixed something and to reboot the ATA. I did and still have the same problems.
Anyone Else?

Yup, I'm getting the same exact thing for outbound calls as well- 646 area code. However, I did notice the number changed, but kept the 646 area code. I did the whole reboot, blah blah blah. Any update from Vonage on this?

Area cide 646 is the "fake" area code that VOIP telephone(s) use.
The 7-digit number after it is "fake" also. |

I've been getting the same crap here in NYC. All hours of the day, especially at night and early in the AM I get calls. Mostly the caller ID says "Unknown", but sometimes it says "646-519-7489".
Seeing as I've had this number since 1990 without a problem, and just recently switched to vonage, I have to believe it has something to do with the way the maintain their numbers.
Someone must have access to their dbase or something.
I'm about ready to scream my neck off. They are no help. What kind of [Admin Edit] company designs a service using voip and doesn't build in a way to block certain calls?
They're all [Admin Edit] as far as I'm concerned.

I'm an Optimum Online customer in NYC. I just got a 646 area code and googled to this forum. The answer to the ongoing question is this:
-646 is a new NYC area code
-646-519-7489 is the number for some sort of 3rd party calling system.
The first time I picked up the line was empty. I called it back and it kept requesting a PIN. 5 minutes later the number called back and someone was there. It was a later from an accounting office working for the VA. Her numbers were a 800 and 212 area codes. I asked if her system was VOIP and she said her office contracts through a calling center. What happens is that a caller (the VA here) uploads a list of calls that need to be made. The center then links up with the office caller (VA) and then dials groups of numbers simultaneously. Whichever number picks up first is connected to the office caller. The rest turn into empty lines. This method keep telephone operators gainfully employed and eliminates them waiting for someone to pickup. No time spent listening to ringinng or answering machines. It isn't hard to imagine that this technology can be used by any telephone based entity such as telemarketers (ugh). |
