i dont see why you would unlock your phone box. if you were to go to another Voip company, most likely they will offer a free box as well. unless Vonage was the only people offering free phone boxes, i dont see why you would unlock your box.

Appears like it's from an AOL IM message...if so, figures... Nothing on AOL but paedophiles and 12 year olds.

some people just hate to have good equipment around wasting space Wink

it's possible to use something like a pap2 (or 2-3 of them) in conjunction with, say, a wrt54g with a 3rd party firmware (openwrt) with asterisk installed on it to create your own internal pbx for your house. if you've gone the Voip route and have eventually cancelled (or upgraded, switched providers, or otherwise have a "working" adapter sitting around and not being used) then it seems logical you could use it for that (it wouldn't, after all, be used for a competitor... just your own personal purposes). anyway, it's not something that the average joe would try to do, but it's a perfectly reasonable possibility for someone who likes to tinker and has the skills to do something useful with it instead of chucking it out in the garbage.

that's primarily why places like Vonage frown upon people being able to unlock their device. they figure you might sign up for them, get a deal on the device, and then cancel and take the device to a cheaper competitor -- i can understand their logic, but i can still see the customer's desire as well to not turn a perfectly good piece of equipment into a brick.

there's gotta be some kind of middle-ground between the company's (vonage's) desire to protect its investment and the user's rights to not get left with a useless piece of equipment Wink for me, it doesn't much matter -- i signed up online and got the router mailed to me which i'll return upon cancellation of my service sometime in the future. but people who purchased it in the store don't send it back and hence have something which for all intents and purposes could be used for something else.

if you purchased it in-store and got a rebate to reimburse you for the cost of the device, then i can understand Vonage thinking that it's "theirs", but there are people who purchased the device outright and didn't get reimbursed, or also the unfortunate many who tried to get their rebates and got screwed on it -- for those people that device should belong 100% to them and they should have the ability to do whatever they want with it.

perhaps for people who have not gotten a rebate for their device such that they have paid for it, they should offer an "unlock" charge, perhaps paying $25 (a new ata is in the neighborhood of $50 so it's gotta be reasonable) to Vonage so they unlock it so it's useful to you. once you leave, even if they never unlock it, it can never be used for another Vonage customer (non transferrable -- right? they make people get a new device anyway), so it's not like they're losing anything, and if they get $25 out of you to unlock it so you can use it for your own purposes then it's a win-win. so, since it makes a moderate amount of sense, it'll of course never happen.
