I am currently receiving Internet service from my neighbor. He is a Vonage customer. I am interested in utilizing their service as well.

The question I have, is will it work with virtual, private IP addresses? My entire network is on the 192.168.x.x network.

Um. Does your neighbor know that he is your internet provider?

The short answer is no, you can't use their Vonage service as well. Unless you are really close to their house and you steal their cordless phone handset.

The neighbor does know that I am using his Internet service. He planned it that way.

I am not looking to use their Vonage service. I am looking to establish my own Vonage service, using private IP addressing, from my network, attached to his.

I would think so...Are you using his internet wirelessly? Or is there a really long network cablingn running from his house to yours?

Yes it does work behind NAT for example, every Vonage customer that has their phone adapter behind another router.

First, the legal issue. I'll take you at your word that your neighhbor is OK with this, but is his ISP? Many ISPs discourage connection sharing, and he may be violating his Terms of Service. Depending on your ISP and your local laws, he would be AT LEAST subject to disconnection and a penalty fee.

Local laws may even define this as a criminal act ("Theft of Service") on one or both your parts, if you get caught you could face legal as well as civil penalties. So, for the rest of this advice, I'm going to assume you have checked this with your neighbor's ISP. Otherwise, please stop reading this right here, and I accept no responsibility for any TOS or law violations you and/or your neighbor may undertake. Smile

The Vonage devices (the newer ones, at least) only need Internet access on a predefined list of ports. As long as your neighbor has not specifically blocked the ports Vonage needs for forwarded them to another computer, it will work.

As long as you can get a hard-wired Ethernet port that can route to the Internet, the Vonage device can get out.

Bandwidth may be an issue, especially if your neighbor has his/her own Vonage line or either of you use BitTorrent. The key question is how much upstream bandwidth he has. He will need to have at least 180kbps available (unused) bandwidth for both of you to be on the phone. Careful configuration of a good front-end router would help, as long as there is sufficient bandwidth to do what you want.
