PostPosted: Sun Feb 05, 2006 12:18 am    Post subject: RTP300 not configuring with Comcast Cable Motorola SB5120 Reply with quote Back to top

I am having a complicated issue that no tech support seems to know how to handle.

I have my computer connected to a Motorola SB5120 Cable Modem by USB.
I have the cable modem connected to the RTP300 in the Internet Port.
The computer is connected to the RTP300 under one computer port.

The problem lies in the fact that my computer has an Ethernet controller. My computer shows 2 connections when connected to the RTP300....being that my cable modem is connected by USB...I can connect to the internet whether the RTP300 is plugged in or not. Also the RTP300 is pulling IP info and everything from the ethernet controller and not the modem. What do I do? I can't get the phone to work at all...when everything is connected as it should be, NOTHING works. The only time I can get the internet at all is when I unplug the router from the computer.

Am I doing something wrong? Someone please help!

Try this:
Make sure your computer is set to obtain an IP via DHCP.
Power everything off.
Disconnect everything (USB, ethernet).
Connect the cable modem to the WAN port on the RTP300.
Connect your computer's network card to a LAN port on the RTP300.
Power on the cable modem. Wait for a couple minutes.
Power on the router. Wait for a couple minutes.
Power on your computer.
Is it working?

There is a way to make this work, however, if you search the forums, you'll find a great deal on this.

My suggestion: If your PC has an Ethernet port, go get 2 ethernet cables. Connect the modem to the Vonage adapter, then connect the Vonage adpater to your computer. It's alot easier that way.

BTW, if your computer doesn't have an Ethernet port and it's a PC, Ethernet cards can be had at CompUSa for about $10-15 nowadays. I think the whole USB setup is stupid, but that's my opinion.

UPDATE: Wait a minute, according to this:

"I have my computer connected to a Motorola SB5120 Cable Modem by USB.
I have the cable modem connected to the RTP300 in the Internet Port.
The computer is connected to the RTP300 under one computer port.

Are you telling me you are using BOTH the Ethernet AND the USB port on the cable modem? You can't do that since it's a modem, not a router.

Here ya go:

1) Connect Ethernet port of Modem to WAN port of RTP.
2) Connect one of the RTP ports to you computer.

Do that first and let us know what happens.

thanks so much to both of you...I had been working on this problem for 2 days (after the initial 2 days i worked on it before when it worked for a few hours and quit on me.)

blakadher came through with the simplest but correct solution. I think I was just rushing to get things up and going and not waiting long enough for things to load up....I had to start the modem...then the router...and then the computer...but wait 3 minutes after each startup...now I'm running better than ever. I also had to disconnect the USB cord...it was complicating the issue....I didn't have to reconfigure or anything...I did perform a hard reset before turning everything back on though...

I hope this stays up and running for a while. At least I know what to do next time...thanks to you guys....You guys should get paid for this....the 4 online techs and the one phone tech person DID NOTHING and KNEW NOTHING....and they took forever to tell me that they knew nothing..lol

"You guys should get paid for this"

Aw, that's fine, Since most of us are full-time geeks in our normal jobs, we already do. I consider everything I learn here just more money for me to bargain for in an interview. Very Happy

lol I have the exact same setup as you.... i have had my old linksys befsr41 4 port router already setup and running for the last 2 plus years , so when i received the new RPT300 linksys model i just unplugged the old one and replaced it.

so my setup is the motorola modem sb5120 is plugged into router

then from router i have two computers plugged in with NIC's (network interface cards) each computer has a linksys NIC

plugged in the phone using a normal phone cord into an existing phone jack (unplugged phone wires from coming into the house from my personal box outside door)

turned everything off , then turned on modem, router, computers and just use my internal phone jacks to plug in all my phones (3 total, all wireless) and everything works great.

if you know nothing about routers then you will have to change the default user/pass for security reasons...default is admin/admin

to reach the routers settings just put 192.168.15.1 into your browsers address space and hit enter or click go (any browser should work , internet explorer, opera, firefox blah blah blah)
