Why does this feel like were trying to disarm a bomb? "Ok, now carefully cut the pink wire, but don't touch the others, or it's over. Steady........"

Just kidding. Lol

Very Happy . I just hope those old wires don't start snapping on him, but they don't really look that bad.

Good News! I disconnected the green and all the phones went dead! And as per instructed on bomb disecting, will remove the red.

All are clearly marked.....!!!

Now my only concern is the "other" inbound phone line that is not connected to the green or red post. (In the picture it is the dark wire in the middle going up) It is split and connected to the two bottom posts. Connected to those posts are a yellow attached to one side and a black attached to the other side and then the red/grn go to the main red/grn posts.

I think this might be for a second line because about 10 years ago I had a second line put in for a fax machine and the telephone guy rigged up the jack in my office so that I could just put a splitter in the jack and had two lines. (That additional line was turned off about 2 years later).

Should I disconnect it also? Would it have power to it? I just want to make sure I've removed all possible power sources!

I'm ok with everything so far.....just afraid I'm going to blow out the Vonage adapter because of something stupid!

Thanks!

If you truly think it's for the second line, JUNK IT! It very well could still have voltage on it, and there's no sense taking any chances.

Now, after you get this whole thing disconnected, and have Vonage working with your house wiring, I would seriously consider having an NIU put in. It's not a hard upgrade, plus, like I said before, it'll be a good thing to have around come house selling time. Nothing elaborate, just enough to make it simple to connect/disconnect things. I'm sure you don't want to go through this again, and a potentially buyer sure won't want to. There's some good advice on here about doing a home-grown type deal, but that's up to you. Personally, I'd have a professional bring me into the 21st century.
Smile

Good luck and keep charging. You'll have the satisfaction when you're done that YOU made it happen!

Agreed. Sounds like you've got it on the run.

By the way, did we ever figure out where the water meter is hooked in? We've accounted for 4 jacks in the house, 3 with newer looking colored wires and 1 with old fabric wires. That leaves the water meter. I see another uncolored wire of some sort coming in from the top left. It seems to end in the middle of the terminal box without connecting to anything. Are there wires from it that I can't see?

Steve,

Funny I hadn't noticed the one wire in the middle! So I just went and looked and followed it to a cold water pipe!! So its the ground.
As far as the water meter, I tracked it to a splice into one of the lines (installed by the city meter folks!).

I received the confirmation on the line transfer to Vonage today.....all is working well with the direct connection to the adapter. All my other phones are still working.....so I was a bit concerned until I just read the details of the conversion letter that says they will be active until midnite. I'm waiting for those extensions to go dead before I make the final "cut"! (tomorrow hopefully!)

And then I'll really find out how well we did! You guys have helped tremendously......and yes I should hire a professional and redo all the wiring! Actually I've been wanting to have the whole house rewired (electrical) and upgraded so If I ever get the $$ I'll have them do the phone lines too! My house was built in 1926 - I guess I should have mentioned that in the beginning - explains a lot!

Thanks!

..........................SUCCESS!

I've disconnected both inbound wire sets......got all the inside wires "reconnected" with minimal "breakage"!!! And no SHOCKS!!!

ALL jacks are working! And I'm very confident that the outside lines are completely disconnected!!! (Even though they were still live this morning)

Now to see how well Vonage works!

Dave - Steve - Thanks again for taking the time to give me advice.....I'm not sure what I would have done or what would have happened without it!!
