Hey guys, I got Vonage a week or two ago and have had mixed reviews in terms of the service. The first week however, I discovered it only occurred during downloading torrents (and since I forgot to set limits on the uploads, all of my upstream got hogged. We could hear the receiving end but we would come out choppy for them.)

Anyways, this still occurs sometimes. I've lowered the quality of the call as well. Speedtests from InternetFrog show that I have plenty of upstream and downstream for the quality it's set on (right now, Normal).

Then I thought about setting up the QoS on the router to prioritize the Voip traffic. Now others said this was probably already prioritized internally. Does anyone know this for certain?

So I decided to give this a shot and logged into my router control, it's firmware version: 1.00.60. After looking at the User Manual, it seems that the manual for the exact same model mentions a ton of features mine doesn't seem to have. In particular, setting port ranges instead of single ports.

Did anyone else notice this? I figure I'd have to set it to prioritize ports 10000 - 20000. But how am I supposed to?

The ports are probably already prioritized. However, I've found the QoS on the WRTP54G to be so useless (not to mention that P2P was crashing my WRTP54G daily anyway) that I finally gave up and spent $50 of my Vonage savings to put a WRT54GL with aftermarket firmware in front of the WRTP54G. Best thing I ever did. My Vonage calls are now clearer than they have ever been, my P2P and my network are solid, and QoS works like a charm now.

The problem with QoS on the WRTP54G, I believe, is that it cannot accurately determine how much upstream bandwidth is available. Without that number, QoS is useless.

That sounds ridiculous! You had to buy another router and put it in front of it? How did you set it up? And what do you mean by aftermarket firmware? Do you mean some of these third-party firmware programs I've seen? I'm always iffy about anything firmware if it isn't official.

What is your setup *exactly* out of curiosity? And is the improvement THAT much better?

It seemed ridiculous to me at first, too, but over time I've come to prefer having a router that I have absolute control over, and the setup was not that hard.

The technical details of my setup are in my signature, and also covered as "option one" of an article I have typed up on having two routers: http://vonage.nmhoy.net/tworouters.html

Bascially, I bought a WRT54G back when the WRT54G was a Linux based router (the router I bought is now called the WRT54GL), and I loaded an aftermarket firmware called HyperWRT Tofu on it http://tofu.polarcloud.com/ which took about 10 minutes to install.

Then I tuned my QoS as per the article I wrote that I already posted earlier, and now:

1. I can run BitTorrent for months at a time without any issues (the WRTP54G used to crash daily, or worse).
2. I have working QoS so that my BitTorrent slows itself down automatically whenever I want to do anything else.
3. Since the WRTP54G is only doing Vonage duty now, processor and memory are freed up to do better voice on the unit, and my Vonage line quality became significantly better immediately.

That's what worked for me. Your mileage may vary. Wink
