It seems everybody has a different opinion or answer on this topic of Vonage unlocking devices. Customer service says yes we do, which led me to an hour of frustration with tech support saying no we don't. Does Vonage have a final word on this. I canceled one of my lines and would love to have a device to increase my knowledge of Voip with, but I don't want to spend hours on the phone getting the run around and repeating my billing address until my head explodes. I am beginning to understand peoples frustration with having a "brick" that they own (compliments of 2 + years with Vonage).

I think you're wasting your time. I don't think you'll get anyone at Vonage to do it.

Since unlocking it technically violates the TOS, even though that obviously does not apply since you have left Vonage and the device is yours, unencumbered by the TOS, posting unlocking instructions here would obviously not be a good idea.

PostPosted: Fri Feb 03, 2006 10:23 pm    Post subject: My Confusion Reply with quote Back to top

My confusion (and frustration) about this whole issue is is that with all the "Vonage" reps on the boards no one will come back with an answer that doesn't sound like Bill Clinton talking to the press about his sex life. To put it another way, why will the Vonage folks not give a simple answer like "Yes, Mark, we do unlock devices for former Vonage customers" or "No Mark, you may as well recycle the device to be used as plastic playground chips". Instead we get, well, some people do some of the time if they know it can be done and if they know how to do it. How can you run a customer support organization if you get a different response on policy every person you talk to. I know I'm probably wasting my time, but to be honest this and other issues is a big motivator for my move away from Vonage. In my opinion they are becoming just as bad as the big bad land line companies by ignoring the most important tenant of a successful business. Keep people happy so they tell their friends. My friends are at this moment hearing me complain that I own a "brick". Which by the way, would be no threat to Vonage by unlocking and would provide a revenue stream from people leaving anyway. Where else do you get to charge people to leave. Except maybe NYC, but thats another story.

Anyway, I still would love a clear answer on policy from the Vonage reps here, but I'm not holding my breath.

I understand your frustration. A clear policy needs to be put in place, agreed.

However, finding the answer yourself may be faster than waiting on hold for a Vonage rep. Others have apparently done it, as a ten second Google search seemed to indicate. One guy seems to have even gone to the trouble of putting a guide out there.

So you appear to have alternatives. Depend on Vonage to do it, or do it yourself. Vonage has no obligation to unlock it, though you can certainly continue pursuing it through them if you choose, of course.

Either way I wish you the best of luck and hope you do manage to get it unlocked. There's nothing better than learning a new technology, and there's no lack of free Voip (without POTS) providers out there you could use your new toy on.

I don't mean to be a nay say'er, but believe it when I say I have tried the google route. I would rather pull teeth than talk to CS. There is a lot of information, most of it saying it has never been succesfully done. It apparently is a completely different beast than the infamous linksys units. I understand the limitations of the board, but I would be curious if anyone has ever seen and completely read someone's account of a complete success with this unit. I believe I have been to the one detailed site you elude to, but even that stops short of anything useful and as much as says your wasting your time.

My apologies, the main site I came up with said "I was able to unlock it" then followed 5 paragraphs of their attempt with the conclusion.. "but it dialed the Mother Ship and reset itself to Vonage in the end."

I missed the "failure" message at the end, because the process he was following looked promising.

Sorry for the misinformation. Sad
