PostPosted: Thu Feb 02, 2006 7:42 pm    Post subject: My caller ID display Reply with quote Back to top

I am new to Vonage, but I have gone through the procedure every day for the last 10 days. It works mostly. But I remember that when I "initiated" the phones (during my first call), I gave my name and number, which would show up on other people's phones. However, it does not, but I have several phone lines, so I would want to go in and see what I have entered. But for the life of me, I cannot figure out (or find -- I have looked for hours) where to see and reenter this information (in the phones, routers on on the Vonage website).

I have two RTP300 routers, and, should it matter, Uniden TRU 8866 base and associated handpieces.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

it doesn't and it won't. you didn't give any information "that would show up on other people's phones". you may have thought you did, or maybe someone told you it would, but it doesn't, and it won't.

Well, John, I know I did give the information somewhere. I remember, because at the time, I did not recognize what it was because of the unwieldy terminology used.

In any event, no-one by myself know how I want my name displayed on others' phones, so there must be somewhere where you can spedify this? Or is there a default?

Your thoughts?

Vonage buys the phone numbers in blocks from local telcos. They do not publish information on their individual callers to any regular caller ID databases, where phone companies normally look up the NAME information that they display when they receive a call.

So, basically, your name will show up as "Unknown", "Unavailable", blank, or in some cases "VONAGE HOLDINGS", depending on what company Vonage ended up buying the block of phone numbers yours got allocated from, and what names might have been defaulted on all those records in the public databases.

Vonage does not customize caller ID for people, though hopefully they will offer this service (or at least publishing your name, at your option, into the databases). You also won't show up in your local phone book, etc.

Vonage is the same as most cell phones in this regard. You aren't doing business with a regular "landline" phone company, so they do not participate in the standard methods of listing your phone number. So there won't be an entry for you in the standard data sources.

Actually, come to think of it, you probably provided this information for E-911, not caller ID. Vonage does ask for this information for 911 purposes.

I'll give him the benefit of the dount that E911 wasn't the "unweildly terminology" he didn't recognize, heh, but who knows. Well, Hans, you may have given information but it wasn't for "outgoing" caller id. I would check to make sure it wasn't an email from your bank asking for your account number and password.

John, cut out the sarcasms. Just because you open your mouth, does not mean that the world gasps with admiration. Some of us new with Vonage have some brains, some experience from other parts of life, and I am sure most of us can do without your "help".

Really? I do. Very Happy

"most of us can do without your "help"

Yeah, because you've been around SO LONG to be able to tell that. Let's compare how many people he's walked through these issues compared to you. No one said you didn't have brains, just that you're confused about setting your own Caller ID. It's NOT a selectable option with Vonage. End of story.

Dave, you can defend John as much as you want, but the fact remains that he was rude and condescending. I don't accept that, and I am sure no one else does. It does not matter if he is right, and I am wrong. All he needed to say was what you said: there is no such option.

I haven't been around that long, either, but I can say that I've noticed John (reebok, whatever) can be a bit of an arse with his replies. It's like any other support forum or list (I've been on my share of programming ListServs) where you get the grizzled old veterans who's patience ran out long ago, but that's still no excuse to be a jerk to people who are asking legitimate questions.
