I have a setup using the linksys Vonage wireless router with 2 phone ports (WRT54G). My desktop PC has wireless adapter. When I pick up the phone to make a call, the internet connection on my desktop gets disconnect. Sometimes it gets restored when I hangup, but sometimes I need to reboot to get it working.

Has anyone noticed this problem before and is there a fix for it.

Are you using a 2.4GHz cordless phone by any chance?

I am using a 2.4 GHz cordless phone ? I am aware that the 2.4 GHz phones are not the best if you have a wireless setup but I have been a Voip user for more than a year (7 months with Vonage), but the setup used to work good, until we moved recently to our new home.

Is buying a 5.4 GHz phone only option to resolve the problem ?

I had the same issue as you (this was before using Vonage). Everything worked fine and then one day my laptop started losing its wireless connection when the phone would ring. I have no idea what changed (I can't remember if it coincided with a change of the wireless NIC I used or not). I ended up getting a Uniden 5.8GHz phone and I've never had the wireless disconnect problem since. I should note that this was not my only problem with a 2.4GHz phone. I would get phantom rings or calls from people asking for Mary, which just happens to be my next door neighbor's name. I hesitate to say that getting a 5.8GHz phone is the "only option", though. Perhaps another forum member will have some ideas such as changing the channel your phone and/or wireless network operates on.

I have the same router as you..
However I have had similar, though not entirely the same issues..
For some unknown reason, I experienced, and at times still do, choppy calls..
BUT, this ONLY habitually occurs at NIGHT..
Sometimes if my son is using his computer, on the wireless network, I will get choppy calls...I hear the party fine, they cannot hear me!!

If I run one of those Voip tests, I get the "tin can and string is better" finding..
I lose alot of packets GOING OUT..

The tech had me change my Cable Modem to a "newer" one..
That hasn't erased the problem..
TWC says it's Vonage problem, but how can that be?
Daytime use is fine..

This has me perplexed......At night my wife walks around the house, (while on the phone) yelling like that idiot on the verizon commercials.."Can you hear me? Can you hear me?"
Then she says get rid of this Vonage..
LOL.....

I am using a 5.8ghz phone system!!

Good Luck......I'm still sticking with Vonage...I like the cost and benefits..BUT I will have to rectify this issue sooner or later..

This says it all, it sounds like your internet connection isn't fast enough to support a strong Voip connection. Have you tried configuring the bandwith saver to a lower setting to see if that helps?

knight2006,

you can also consider changing the channels on both your phone and your wireless router on opposite extremes of the spectrum (e.g. channel 1 on the phone and channel 11 on the wireless router). You might also be getting interference from your neighbors etc.

Try the easy solution first -- try a hardwired phone and see if the problem persists. If it does, then you've got a bandwidth problem. If it works fine, then you've got both the cordless phones and the wireless network trying to use the same channel at the same time (which doesn't work). You can then try changing channels on the wireless network and see if it improves things...and if it doesn't, you're going to have to get a 900Mhz phone or 5.8Ghz phone. It could also be that one of your neighbors just got a new 2.4Ghz device as well. Back before I got a couple of DSL connections, I used to "borrow" my neighbor's wireless internet connection when I needed to send a few large files out. Smile 300'+ between me & him.
