I'm using Road Runner as my Internet provider. Recently I called customer service regarding replacing my cable modem to a more recent model. Anyhow right before i was going to get off the phone with the customer rep, she reminded that they provide phone service as well and if I was interested.

Now last year I had to call customer service more then a few times with problems with my service. And recently recently called a few days ago. Never once did they mention digital phone service.

Now perhaps it was just a coincidence that she asked me now when I happen to be calling with my new Vonage hook-up. But is there anyway for them to know that you happen to be calling over Voip?

doubt it - probably ask everyone that same question- you know if you ask someone a question there is a definite possibility of a yes answer. This also works in other applications in life as well but I digress or something like that.

If it were tech support they would know (how I do not know) what routers you have connected but then again they are in sales so they dont care either way.

I cannot speak for all Road Runner offices, but the one in Houston knew I had a Voip on their system. I was not calling from the Voip, but was asking about slow service. The operator (rep) asked if I had Voip and I said yes, but not from Time Warner.

I have had no further inquiry from TW about my Voip.

There are several ways they could.

First, your caller ID information. Especially if you are one of the ones who got a block of numbers that show up as "VONAGE HOLDINGS" on your outbound caller ID - that would be a dead giveaway.

Second, your phone number. Vonage may have received a block of numbers from the local carrier that, while local, are not "normal" phone numbers. For example, the Maine phone number I have is local to the area, but everyone always asks me "where is that? is it a local call?" because it's not one of the "usual" city codes here.

This also happens with cell, since they are frequently issued the same "oddball" numbers. But cell phones usually have a caller ID of "CELL PHONE (state)" or something like that.

Of course, they may also be monitoring your bandwidth and seeing a large number of UDP packets streaming both ways from time to time, all to the same IP addresses which can be traced easily back to Vonage. A simple script could put a flag on your account saying "VoIP user - take next opportunity to try to sell our Voip to them."
