Vonage should update this feature so that if the caller id of the person who is trying to reach you matches a number in your simulring list then it should NOT try to call back that same number, just the others on the list. That would solve the problem of calling home from your cell.

That's a pretty clever idea, actually, you should put that in the "Vonage Feature Requests" section.

The other thing you can do, if your cell phone provider allows it, is block caller ID on the outbound call. That way, your cell phone won't get its own caller ID info.

great idea littlebuzz!

When I set this up I changed the default time on the Vonage configuration page from 30s to 25s before going to voice mail. This still give me 4 rings to pick up the phone at home and it is just short enough that it doesn't go to my cellphone's voice mail. I also have Vonage send an email to my hotmail account with the message. I have hotmail send my cellphone the email via text message (cool feature of hotmail). That way I should always know via cellphone if I have any messages at home.

and here's an interesting wrinkle...

i don't have VM on my cell, but I always made sure i turned simulring off when i wasn't carrying my cell. i was worried that when the cell was turned off, that callers would hear verizon give the 'the verizon caller you have dialed is not available...' type message.

turns out that, for me at least, simulring is smart enough not to treat the verizon-generated pickup as an actual 'answer'. the switch must be smart enough to tell the difference between a voicemail pickup and an 'out of network' verizon-generated message. when my cell is off, only my home phone rings.

i've only tried this a few times, but it's been pretty consistent so far. ymmv.

That's different behavior than we're seeing.

We have my wife's cell phone simul-ring with Vonage, so when she's out and about, she gets all the calls.

But when her phone is off, anyone who calls our Vonage line goes directly into voicemail on the cell phone.

We also have the problem of her calling home via her cell. The Vonage line will ring once, and she'll get dumped into Verizon voicemail.

Hopefully Vonage will fix the 2nd issue.

right. i don't have voicemail. i'm referring to the verizon network messages you get when someone has their phone turned off. it seems to behave differently than a voicemail answer.
